Floyd Mayweather Jr. & Redemption in Puerto Rico: Could He Face Kermit Cintron?

    Picture this.

Floyd Mayweather and Kermit Cintron have not fought since May of 2010.

Cintron was tripped in the fourth round of a very uneventful fight with Paul Williams on May 8th, 2010.

The fight was ruled a technical decision in Williams' favor.

Mayweather is coming off a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley on May 1st, 2010.

He experienced a few knee-buckling punches in the second round only to come back strong from the third on, winning every round thereafter.

Cintron is currently No. 2 in the junior middleweight (154 lbs.) rankings. Mayweather is ranked No. 2 at welterweight (147 lbs.).

Filipino sensation Manny Pacquiao is ranked No. 1 in the welterweight division and Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Cotto is ranked No. 1 in the junior middleweight division.

Beating Kermit Cintron at 154 could hype a fight with Cotto, or Mayweather could beat Cintron at 147 and skip directly to the fight fans want between himself and Pacquiao.

Either way, both fighters wouldn't be at a disadvantage. While Cintron possesses power, a slightly longer reach and about two inches of more height, he isn't as fast as Mayweather, whose reflexes and defense will likely be hell to work through.
    Who Should Mayweather Fight?
Kermit Cintron and then wait another year to come back. Kermit Cintron and then Miguel Cotto. Kermit Cintron and then Manny Pacquiao Someone else.

The fight could also be held in Puerto Rico with neutral Las Vegas judges and officials flown in. This could test Mayweather's international presence and bring new life to a fight many may be reluctant to pay for.

If the fight were to work out well in Puerto Rico, Mayweather could fight Cotto in Puerto Rico again on Saturday, November 19th, 2011, the anniversary of the discovery of Puerto Rico.

If this fight is announced in late April, both fighters could keep their ranks. Then the fight could be set for June or July, leaving November open for a Cotto or Pacquiao fight for the 154 or 147 division championship.

To be fair, Floyd will not have fought for over a year, even if he unexpectedly scheduled a bout after his April 28 hearing. He deserves a tuneup. I wouldn't mind Cintron.

Why Cintron? Mayweather should just face Cotto. Cotto will knock Floyd out!
