Chris Eubank, with Barry Hearn by his side, said in 1989 "I'm the best boxer in the world, I'll be WBC champion within two years."
Eubank was offered the chance to fight his sparring partner Herol Graham in 1990 in a WBC world title eliminator to decide who would fight Roberto Duran, but Eubank's great vision caused him to turn down the opportunity and drum up a legendary rivalry with Nigel Benn instead (who was the opposite to Graham in terms of boxing - exciting, and the opposite to Eubank in terms of personality). Eubank saw that vision.. the contrasting charactors between him and Benn, and gained his financial rewards in doing so! Who would of wanted to see Eubank and Herol 'Boring' Graham?
Eubank then saw the ease in which his sparring partner Graham handled Julian Jackson until the one punch KO, and Eubank then signed on the dotted line in December 1990 to fight Jackson in a unification because there would be interest (and money I guess) in that fight at that time - Eubank had just put in a great performance against Benn on ProBox while Jackson had just made a lot of noise with his one punch KO of Graham on ProBox. Jackson ducked Eubank for six months, claiming he had eye problems.
Naseem Hamed was planning to fight for the WBC title in 1995, but WBC wouldn't recognise him as the #1 contender because he wasn't American, Naz then earned the right to be the WBC mandatory but they just wouldn't make him the mandatory. So in the end, he just went for the WBO instead (Barrera wouldn't fight Naz in 1995 because Naz wasn't WBO #1 contender, so you could argue that Barrera was avoiding him, oh and I remember that Barrera refused to recognise the WBC).
