Tons of great athletes drank boatloads. Daryl Strawberry, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, all great baseball players drank tons. Diego Maradona was a huge drug addict, great soccer player. Of course it CAN be done. But what I was saying was that it's not SUSTAINABLE. Most athletes who drink or use drugs heavily will eventually fall off. Look at Bernard Hopkins: Lives 100% clean. Doesn't smoke, doesn't drink, doesn't do drugs, and doesn't eat meat during training cam. That's why he's still competitive at 46 years old on a world class level. That would not be possible if he drank or did drugs.Comment

But, the question will always remain, how good could Ruth or Maradona have been if they had a more settled/balanced private life?
Anyone feel like discussing Tiger Woods' sexual addiction ?
What did that cost him over the last 18 months or so ?
* marriage
* sponsorship
* fan's
* #1 spot
* $$$$$$$$$$
Great point about Hopkins.
Inbetween fights..... running at 5.30am, in bed by 9.30pm.
It's no coincidence why he still performs at 46yo.Comment

In a recent interview with The Vindicator, former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (26-2, 32KOs) discussed his past problems with drinking and partying. He spent 60 days in the Ranch Recovery Center in Desert Hot Springs, Calif. and in January he spent 20 days in the Betty Ford Clinic.

Maybe I did not make myself very clear. Supposedly his drinking has only been a problem since he became middleweight champ so he has not been drinking long and if he stopped for months at a time during training camp I don't see how it was a problem for those fights and I believe that is what he is claiming. And after his last lose his his drinking may have began to be more important to him then training or even fighting and he then decided that it was time for a change. But at the time of the Hopkins and Martinez fights he claims that his drinking was not why he lost. And I believe for a few reason and one them is that he was simply out boxed by better boxers.Comment

We know three things for sure now from this thread.
1) no one that drinks could ever be an elite athlete.
2) no elite athlete ever drank, and if one fell through the cracks and did, their life came tumbling down because of it
3) Kelly pavlik's personal business is more public than I though. Everyone knows everything about him around here.
For the record, I would also outdrink Kelly. Then I'd punch loew I'm the mouth for ruining pavlik's career.Comment

I'm a recovered alcoholic with over 2 decades of sobriety behind me. Pavlik is knew to the business of recovery. It takes most people a lot longer than 3 1/2 months to realize how deeply alcohol affected them.Comment

Those comments were part of a 35 minute video taped interview. During the interview Pavlik addressed numerous issues both past and future. He seemed to be speaking from the heart in a thoughtful and sincere fashion. I have no idea why Vester would choose to put such a deceptively negative spin on things.Comment
