Damn, I can't believe everyone is bashing him for saying this. He isn't making excuses and I think that's big of him to say that. If he said "I lost those two fights because I was drinking too much" everyone would be slagging him off for making excuses. Give the guy a fucking break.

I also see a lot of people claiming he said that he doesn't have a problem with drinking. Where did he say that? Obviously he thinks he has a problem since he checked into rehab. He just said it didn't effect his fights. He's just trying to be a stand up guy and not take anything away from Martinez and Hopkins.

PerSonally, I don't see how alcohol is detrimental in any way shap or form, unless it involves persecution by law enforcement.

The sad thing is that the addict is often the last one to admit that there is a problem, just like Hatton and Pavlik. No need for us fans to go along with their denials.
Wow, this is a tough crowd. And I have to ask what makes you think Pavlik is in denial? He has been in two rehabs and he decided to go, it was not like he was court forced, so I would believe he knows he has a problem. And he may not even be an alcoholic and may just have a drinking problem, and there is a difference and he is the only one who can admit if he is in fact an alcoholic. And as As as it affecting his fighting, if he hasn't been drinking heavy for a long time it surely has not affected his liver as of yet. And unlike some other drugs alcohol burns out of your system pretty fast. There are also all kinds of what they call functioning addicts and alcoholics from all walks of life that get up and go to work and the problem does not affect that part of their lives. And unless Pavlik was drinking during training camp or showing up on fight night with a few belts in him or the alcohol has already began to damage his body he was right not to use it as an excuse. And as some have already stated he should be applauded for his candor when most fighters use so many excuses they can't tell fact from fiction.

Pavlik came from a *****ty little town and somehow blagged his way to the middleweight championship on *** all boxing ability.

Course you're gonna go on a bit of a bender to celebrate.

Alcoholics drink because they have a problem they don't want to face. Just looking at how Kelly carried himself in interviews and in the ring, it was pretty clear he was having problems.

If he wants to say that whatever he's been going through hasn't affected his performances, then hey, take his word for what it's worth. Maybe Taylor was just damaged goods, and he was the first to crack the egg.
