It's a matter of definitions: One can not be down, if he is on the way down. Montiel was still fair game until he hit the canvas. As far as I know, no part of his body besides his feet were on the canvas, so he was still not down.

In fact, the way he hit the canvas, it would have been impossible to hit him when he was down, unless Donaire had squared up and punched directly down.

It is not the same as Abraham taking a clean shot at Dirrell when Dirrell was on the canvas.

Threads get worse every day, Donaire's punch to Montiel was essentially a follow up, it was done in a fluid motion and as others had said if you didn't see it in slow motion you wouldn't recognise it.

With Abraham, there was a good enough delay before he snapped his head back. If I remember things correctly he wasn't in the middle of an offense, Dirrel slipped.

Abraham threw a straight just as Dirrell slipped. Not saying he caused Andre to drop, the punch barely connected, but Abraham could have thought that he had knocked him down and punched again as Donaire is doing.
