montiel got caught, no excuses. i was rooting for montiel, but i saw from the first round he was kinda slow and relaxed compared to donaire, ready to explode and counter. nonito threw the perfect punch, nothing more you can say...

It is either he got careless, fell for Donaire's trap or both.

Man that was a hellacious left hook... no one can discredit Donaire on that knockout. That was a great counterhook and it shows that Donaire's eyes are truly sharp.

But I can't quite put my finger on what Montiel did to get knocked out like that. Maybe he didn't drop his head low enough, or telegraphed that right hook from left field. Stuff like this bugs me.

Either way... beautiful KO.

montiel's defensive mistakes and why he got KTFO:

1) he didn't duck under the counter he should've expected to come. IMHO this was his worst mistake.

2) montiel dropped his right hand down to his waist, instead of immediately bringing it back to his chin. at least montiel could've shrugged his right shoulder up to his ear to partially deflect the punch off his shoulder.

3) montiel could've rolled fully into the punch to avoid the counter left hook. instead, he left the right side of his face totally vulnerable.

3) montiel should've sat down and committed to that punch a lot more than he did. he would've hurt nonito or the momentum would've forced him to turn a lot more than he did, possibly getting him out of range or position for nonito's left hook counter. if you watch nonito's left hook, he spun nearly all the way around with his head down which would've stopped montiel from a counter.
