I'm beginning to get that picture. From the looks of it, the kid could be a star. I think what De La Hoya had to say about all the women surrounding "Canelo" says a lot. Women aren't exactly the sport's biggest fans. If they know who you are, you must have some mainstream appeal.

I am not sure if you have heard of this kid Jose Benavidez Jr. but I feel Top Rank really knows what they are doing with him.

Haye and Khan are massive over here and routinely get into the back of the sports pages of most of the major tabloids. Haye's probably the marginally more well known due to his plastering his face on every talk show around. Valuev's also become somewhat well known, if only as "that big Russian ****er that got beaten by Haye."
In Germany it's well known that the Klitschkos are huge, as well as in most of Eastern Europe. A few days ago I was talking to a middle-aged Ukrainian housewife (don't ask) and even she was well aware of who they were.
Pretty much every Pole I've spoken to knew who Adamek was.
Likewise Koki Kameda for the Japanese.Comment

No problem brother. Yeah I hope Saul Canelo Alvarez can be great Boxing is still searching for that next star after Mayweather and Pacquiao. I feel there are a lot of stars today in boxing actually just American Boxing is really at a low right now. Klitschko vs. Adamek is going to happen in Poland in September and there is going to be over 60,000 fans in a soccer stadium there.

De La Hoya was probably the last true U.S. boxing star. No offense to the Pac-May fans out there, but I just don't see these two as superstars outside the ring. I'm well aware that Manny is a star of supernova status in his homeland, but I don't think the average westerner knows his name. As for Floyd: he's an awesome boxer, but he lacks star-power. Mayweather gets in trouble for silly things. I'm not suggesting he do anything worse, but his persona doesn't inspire interest or adulation. Skills alone don't make one a star with the public.
I've heard Benavidez's name, but this is the first footage I've seen of him. It was a nice, well produced promo on the kid. Thanks for posting it!Comment

It doesn't surprise me the Ukranian woman would know who the Klitschkos are. People are rightfully proud when their own "do good." The Klits may bore a lot of Americans, but they represent their sport and their countrymen well.Comment

Nobody else is getting the attention that these two get in boxing...at least here in the U.S.
The casual fan doesn't know Holyfield still fights...
Based off of my general observation from when I talk to people about boxing...the only people they know of are Mayweather and Pac...except if they are from Puerto Rico or Mexico, then they will know a few of their home fighters...Comment
