WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez has spoken out about the recent rumblings having to do with his promotional situation with Golden Boy Promotions. Marquez's contract with Golden Boy is set to expire in the near future. Golden Boy was attempting to finalize a fight between Marquez and Erik Morales for April 9 in Las Vegas. After the fight appeared to be on the verge of being made, word came down two days ago that Marquez took pass on the fight.

I understand Marquez position. GBP wants to make all the money off the fighters but dont want the fighters to make money. Marquez probably wants more money then they are paying him so he's backing out of the fight. I dont think it has anything to do with Erik, its about money....I respect a man who takes pride in his job and wants to get paid for doing it.

good stuff. nobody wants to see him fight a shot fighter. i reckon maidana vs marquez would be one hell of a fight. failing that, id like to see marquez vs bradley at 140. id probaly pick marquez to beat bradley even at this stage in his career.

Sounds to me like GBP is trying to screw another of their fighters. GBP just strikes me as an opportunistic organization. Maybe it's time for Marquez to just go freelance ala FMJ.
