JMM: What did you focus on most in this preparation for confronting Mayweather?
Cotto: We’ve focused on everything, on everything…we’ve seen Mayweather to be very gifted…but not a Mayweather that’s really mean, who likes to fight. As we would say in Puerto Rico, he’s a coward with ability. His abilities have brought him to triumph, have allowed him to surpass the rest, but I have my abilities, and beyond my abilities, I’ve had the work of sacrificing myself in the gym, and in the moment that his abilities abandon him, my work and my sacrifice will lift me to victory.
Announcer Dude: Miguel, I’ve wanted to ask you: We imagine a strategic, calculated fight tomorrow based on the styles. We’ve never seen a boring fight from Miguel Cotto, but Floyd Mayweather, with his boxing based in his legs and backwards motion, could complicate things. How do you, Miguel Cotto, truly imagine the fight?
Cotto: No, I don’t know. If he stays planted in the middle of the ring, it will make my fight easier. If he decides to move, the ring has its dimensions; in any of its sides, he’ll have to deal with a corner at each end. We’ve worked to perfection, in every moment moving towards the corner, how to work him, how to avoid falling into his game, and how to put it in practice as we’ve done for so many weeks in Orlando, with such fervency, here in Las Vegas, we won’t have any reason to lose.
I really do not think Cotto understands what he is up against. And I do not believe Cotto knew what he was up against when he fought Manny. Miguel will see for a second time what a elite fighter is.
I don't gamble but if I was betting I'd put my money down on Shane Mosley. Against a lot of naysayers I think this is a tailor made opponent for him and it's his fight to lose. Alvarez isn't that mobile, he isn't very fast a foot or in hand speed, he's too willing to stand in front of his opponent, too willing to take punches, not defensively sound enough yet, not experienced enough against quality fighters, he leaves himself open for a lot of big punches. The way he holds his jab leaves an open window for Mosley's powerful right hands to loop around all night. We'll probably find out how well Alvarez can take a drumming to the body as well.
All that Alvarez has going for him is the perceived advantage of being younger, possibly stronger, and more aggressive. If he tries to be aggressive with Mosley, Mosley will use it against him to line up counters to the body, that will in turn open up the big power shots upstairs. Alvarez has some decent offensive tools no doubt, but there's also plenty of questions to be answered about his stamina, his durability, his chin, and how he deals with pressure, REAL pressure. If Mosley is landing on him, wearing him down, and tiring him out, how is he going to handle it? We know that Mosley can survive an attack, he can get on that bicycle and pedal all night avoiding a lot of damage. That takes a lot of focus that people really undermine when evaluating him.
A fighter can get real scatter brained out there trying to think of what to do, Mosley always knows SOMETHING to do and seldom gets really puzzled. Pacquiao and Mayweather frustrated him because they were both a little too fast, and that's something he couldn't thwart with tactics. But, Alvarez isn't Mayweather, he isn't Pacquiao, he isn't even Miguel Cotto or Antonio Margarito. This is a very manageable and winnable fight for Shane Mosley.
Let me say one other thing too; Someone might get knocked out, and if they do, it's going to be "Cinnamon", not "Sugar".
Does anyone else find ellerbe to be a bit of a dodgy character? On every camera shot you find him he's always in the background with that cheezy grin, or in the corner rubbing on mayweather. This guy just seems to have a weird creepy thing about him.
Yesterday at the weigh-in again he tried mouthing off at the opponent. If only one day someone turns around and left hooks this annoying **** to the floor.
there was a thread just like this made a few hours ago and theres been dozens made overall. this subject has been done to death.
who really gives a ****? ellerbee is floyds right hand man, what buboy is to pacquiao, what perez is to cotto, what that ****** guy shane knew from high school is for him. they keep them around bcuz they trust them and help them be comftorable, in ellerbees case he also takes care of arrangements and stuff.
the only thing creepy to me is how obsessed ppl on this site are with ellerbe. i mean come on, background figures have haters now? besides there isnt much to dislike about him, hes well spoken, respectful and shows a great deal of compassion to fallen fighters.
isnt there better things to focus on, like idk.. boxing..
