Comments Thread For: Steward: Cotto To Get Revenge on Margarito, Pacquiao

Trainer Emanuel Steward believes that WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will stop Ricardo Mayorga on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and then move on to avenge his two defeats to Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao. If Cotto beats Mayorga, a rematch with Margarito has already been scheduled for June. A rematch with Pacquiao is possible for the fall but far from a set option. Margarito stopped Cotto in eleven rounds in 2008, while Pacquiao knocked Cotto out in twelve rounds in 2009.

Agree on that one - I'm a big Cotto fan but dont think the outcome would be much different facing Pacman again. Margarito will be a tough fight too but hopefully Steward will help him avoid sitting on the ropes and taking unanswered uppercuts all night.

Unless Cotto DESTROYS Mayorga or Margarito then he should stay far far away from Pacquiao. Unless he just wants another career payday which he very likely does.

Why are we always gettin a fighters plans for his next 2 or 3 fights? And you guys wonder why Mayweather is undefeated because he's always focused on the task at hand. He doesn't worry about the next 2 or 3 fights.

As a Cotto fan here is my hopeful and I believe realistic ending to a great career. 1) Cotto KO's Mayorga in March probably in the middle to late rounds when Mayorga is out of gas. 2) Cotto gets his revenge vs Margarito by completely outclassing him in route to a wide unanimous decision in the Garden during Puerto Rican Day Weekend, and 3) Cotto ends the year and his career with his biggest win. A tough-fought (war) close decision to win the middleweight championship over Sergio Martinez. He retires on top and more importantly with his health intact. Pacquiao and Mayweather wins are not realistic because they are on a different level then the rest of the boxing world. This path would make Cotto a first-ballot Hall of Famer and one of the best of this era.
