I predicted this more than a year ago. Universum gets Zbik a title by putting him in at home with third-rate opposition, the WBC calls him "interim champion," and he defends against nobodies while Universum waits for the WBC to strip the real champion. Zbik is champion without having fought a single fighter among the top 25 middleweights, and thus officially becomes the worst, least-deserving champion in boxing. Now Zbik can stay in Germany fighting nobodies and calling all his lame fights "title defenses." Universum is absolutely the undisputed champion of creating paper champions

In this case it matters. Floyd or Pac do not need belts because they bring huge money.

Guys like Martinez need belts because that is another (the only?) lure to get people to fight him since the appeal of money isn't there.

Without the big bucks or belt, why would I fight Martinez? Ya know?

Not really.

1. Martinez is still the lineal and ring champ. That has more prestige than any abc belt.

2. FWIW, the ring is an actual physical belt so it's not like your just champ on paper. You actually get the physical trinket that comes with winning the belt.

3. All the WBC is doing is setting up Martinez vs Chavez Jr. for the title in the fall. Martinez will be allowed to fight whoever right now (would you rather have him face Dzin or Zbik?) and then Martinez can force Chavez to defend. If Chavez declines or wants to take another bout, Martinez automatically becomes the regular champ again.


Regardless of what people think of Chavez, He does have a good fan base and a bout with him against Martinez in Mexico would be one of Sergio's biggest paydays.

In the end this is really a good thing for Sergio.

Why can't guys like Cotto, Mayweather, Pacquiao etc not fight for the ring belt? Also do you honestly believe the WBC won't make an attempt to have their name attached to a mega-bout involving Martinez?
