To break this thread down, some people scored the bout for Whitaker, some scored it for Chavez, some scored it a draw. There is no clear conclusion on who won the fight.

The most accurate assessment I have heard is that Whitaker should have been disqualified for excessive pushing of Joe "Fair But Firm" Cortez.

I honestly believe Chavez should have won by DQ. I never understood how De La hoya lost to Trinidad for running for 4 rounds. but Whitaker ran for the whole 12 on top of that he landed many low blows and even pushed the referee for ****s sake! If Chavez would have done that he would have been disqualified. I think the styles were so different that it is merely up to opinion. Just look at JMM-PAC II. most experts had JMM winning but the judges picked pacquioa. I think the judging system in boxing is to blame. As some people just like agressors(i.e.e Larry Merchant) others like a thinking man's fighter(Lampley's undying love for Barrera). untill the juging system is revamped and fights are at least an odd number of rounds this will continue to happen. we will continue to see judges picking their favorite style or fighter over who actually won the damn fight. I can still see how people thought Sweet Pea won. but i didn't see a blowout from anyone.
