  • Also keep in mind there are fixed costs associated with owning a venue the size of the Silverdome, no matter how cheap the dude got it.

So even if they lose money it could mean losing less than doing nothing at all. Would be tough to know without all the accounting numbers.

This is a big fight, as a boxing fan this is a level 2, under Manny and Floyd level (Level 1) , but the next level IMO.
Maybe maybe not tough to say. The Silverdome is getting a decent amount of exposure that could be worth the loss just as a marketing expense.

I also don't agree with his assessment (being that I have followed what was going on with the fight and live in that area) and Marley is not the most reliable source.

      • Wow that's bad. This fight fight should have been promoted better, that is the problem these days. only PPV fights draw in the numbers.

Yeah that is also true, but giving away 600k is a guranteed lost, with big risks if you can't fill the seats. While he may have got a loan to buy the place, it's very bad business practice on cash flow like this.

However if this news helps sells seats, then good for US boxing or at least Detroit.

          • that's why it should have been in STL

            • I believe it to be true. I checked as recently as yesterday, and you can still buy large blocks of seats anywhere in the venue.

Let's face it, neither guy is a STAR, and nobody is really doing much in the way of actually promoting the event.

As shaky as Alexander looked in St. Louis last time he fought there, I can't see why Shaw wouldn't beg for the fight to take place there. I understand that hometown officiating is a concern, but Michigan is actually infamous for its ****ty decisions for what little notable shows take place there.

I think they overplayed their hand on this one. Then again, HBO AND the Silverdome gave all parties involved a hell of a safety net, and little incentive at all to go out and sell tickets. $600k site fee, seven-figure paydays for both, plus the option of a guaranteed rematch or HBO appearance in their next fight, either scenario pulling in another seven-figure payday.

the only saving grace is that Bradley and Alexander are both true professionals, and I don't see either screwing the pooch in terms of effort put forth on fight night.

True, what are the ticket websites saying?

It's true that a loss now could mean the place gets people in the future for sure, but a fight which is more or less a super fight needs some atmosphere you know.

It was a fairly big risk and if they are set up for 7k they need $100 a person with a sell out just to make 100 grand.

That would probably be a lot for them though and they probably viewed it as attainable.

I know I can still get tickets, will be interested to see how it is set up to me that will speak about the atmosphere.

                    • As Manny Steward said a few weeks ago: Detriot isnt a boxing town. They support guys from Detriot/Kronk, but other than that people in Detriot aren't really fight goers.

Combine that with that fact that neither Bradley or Alexander are stars and that Detriot is in terrible economic shape.

339 sounds perfectly accurate to me.
