Buster Douglas performance against tyson is way overrated

I've seen him look better than that, Douglas actually had loads of potential in the mid-80's. I actually think he looked scared and timid against Tyson, it's just that Mike was in no fit state to fight that night having taken his foot off the pedal bigtime and just went over to Japan to party (he starved himself for days to get down from 250). I've seen Douglas look better.

Buster faught so well. Everytime Tyson planted his feet he got rocked by hard jabs and left hands and Buster would back out. Even battles on the inside Buster was owning.

I like Buster Douglas. He could have been a great heavyweight if he had the heart. His early losses, and even his loss to Holyfield were an unmotivated Douglas. He faught as a job, and his heart was never in it. His one major exception, was the fight against Tyson. Douglas put his heart and soul into the fight to dedicate it to his mother. If he had that kind of drive his whole heavyweight career, it would have been interesting to see a motivated Douglas vs Holyfield and Lewis.

Douglas probably could have won sooner, he boxed well but cautious, seemed like he knew he could win but didn't want to blow it by getting caught too much. That's how I remember it anyway, not seen it for a while.

Why do people talk about the buster douglas who beat a hungover disinterested unagressive tyson as a great fighter . Douglas looked so great in that fight because tyson looked so bad . Its not hard when your 6'4 to outbox guy who is 5'11 when the little guy dosent jab his way in or bob and weave try to slip punches and just walks straight in trying to land one bomb to finish the fight which is all tyson did for 10 rounds . I mean tyson threw 13 punches in the first round . How can anyone say that tyson was even close to his best in that fight . Thats the worst performance from tyson outside of the lewis, mcbride and botha fights. I mean when did tyson even try to put together a combination in that fight . I mean the james tillis who tested a green tyson would of boxed the ears off the super douglas of toyko , tillis had better movement , was more versatile and fought a much , much better tyson than the imposter douglas beat on for 10 rounds . I mean tyson got beat from pillar to post by all his sparring partners before the fight guys who tyson would usually hammer .

typical Tyson fan who blames all of his shortcomings on something else. It is never Mike's fault.............old,sad story.

Douglas fought great that night and deserves respect for that.

I don't know the specifics regarding Tyson's activities leading up to the fight or his training. I do know that you can't knock Douglas' peformance against Tyson. Douglas DID box cautiously at first, because Tyson still had that aura of invincibility and the mythical power that people talked about. Regardless of how Tyson did or didn't train, Douglas was still facing a fighter that not only had never lost, but had KO'd almost everyone he had faced, in his own mind.
