If HBO is going to dictate fights like this, I wish they would just become a UFC-like entity. Fighters could be contracted by HBO, lose the promoters and allow HBO to make the fights that the fighters and the fans want.

As it stands right now, they are just in the way of progress. Everything is based on their calendar and who they find suitable. At least if they had a boxing "league" of sorts, the promoters would be out of the way and their interests wouldn't conflict with the networks.

Isn't that kind of what The Golden Boy/HBO deal is? Golden Boy gets guaranteed dates for their fighters, but if HBO doesn't like the fight Golden Boy has to find a match up HBO will approve?

One of the Freaks just made me think of this -- how can HBO turn down Cotto-Vanes for $1.5 million yet will flush $1.2 million down the toilet for Berto-Freddy Hernandez on an undercard? Unreal.

Andre Berto is HBOs golden boy. HBO isn't ******ed. They're trying to build up new stars. Martinez, Berto, Canelo, etcetc. it was a good move by HBO.

The problem is money...

People don't understand that all these independent PPVs Bab Arum goes in his pocket to make. Sometimes losing money in the process just so his fighters can stay active, get fights etc etc. But, he barely makes a profit with those. That is a reason why no other promoter really do independent PPVs cuz they would not go in their pocket at all.

So when you're talking about independent PPV Berto is not option(plus he out priced himself out already) with no HBO money, then you have to settle for lesser opponents.

Now Mayorga is just a tune up. He is setting up Margarito-Cotto II for the summer. Is not really that bad.
