Comments Thread For: James DeGale Shines, Batters Paul Smith in Nine

At the Echo Arena in Liverpool, rising super middleweight star James "Chunky" DeGale (9-0, 7KOs) dominated Paul Smith (29-2, 15KOs) on route to a ninth round knockout to capture the British super middleweight title. DeGale really showed his stuff in the fight. He was quicker, more skilled and stronger than Smith. DeGale was landing some very hard shots that Smith took and continue to keep coming. Smith was under the impression that DeGale would gas out in the late rounds, but that didn't happen. The Olympic gold medal winner continued to punish Smith in the ninth and the ref had seen enough and stopped the contest.

He looked very cool calm and collected in there. I thought Paul stood a chance as he was landing some good shots at times, but rather than Degale slow down he turned up the heat.

Paul could have easily carried on though, he wasn't that hurt.

He was hurt and almost out on his feet. If the referee didn't jump in De Gale would have punched him through the ropes.

        Good stoppage.

He is the future of boxing worldwide no doubt, I think with 15 fights he will be ready for world championship contention. He has the speed, the power and the technique to be a great champ. Damn, he just beat a veteran with 29-1 in his 9th fight! Not an easy task.

Smith was far too slow and didnt know how cut the ring off properly, nevertheless DeGale did his own job.

It was a fair stoppage, but he was certainly not out on his feet. I'd suggest you watch more Paul Smith fights, and note that he was sturdyish on his feet and immediately calmly looked into the ref's eyes and complained about him being fine. He was barely dazed.

Take nothing away from Degale however, completely deserved win, good performance, and one to watch.
