Never understood the blind Ali worship. He was a fighter of unquestionable talent. But he was not unbeatable. For every fight he lost he perhaps should have lost another. Norton was robbed once - perhaps twice. Cooper had him down past a ten count etc.
Outside of fighting he was not a particularly likeable fellow. He had an ego the size of a mountain. He mistreated women. He associated with several disreputable types. And his cruel Uncle Tom jibes directed at Joe Frazier were disgusting.
Manny (whilst not perfect) just seems like a nice guy.

What's that supposed to mean?
Ali has the finest resume in Heavyweight History. He defeated every notable fighter in the golden era of heavyweight boxing. Norton was not robbed twice. Ali defeated Norton twice, and anything else is just plain conspiracy.
Ali transcended the sport, took the popularity of boxing to another level.
What you consider "blind worship", most everyone else considers justified praise.
In China Tyson is more respected because he's got Mao on his arm.
In Europe Klitschko is more popular.
In the Philippines Pacquiao is more well known there.
In Puerto Rico Felix Trinidad is.
Well I'm speculating with the last 3.
But I do know in China Tyson is more respected + well known.

He was a rebel with a cause in his time.
In an environment of Freedom Riders getting beat up and children being slapped around for going to "white" schools Ali's rebellion gave people a mainstream sports icon to identify with.
As they were persecuted and made an example of, so was he (unlike many black fighters that toed the line). I'm an ex-soldier but I volunteered and I feel better for it and I left when I was finished.
You could even say Ali's actions contributed to stopping the mandatory draft. Thats what makes him so big.

Ali may have contributed in some small way, but the media was chiefly responsible for the culling of the draft. After the close up and personal footage of the Vietnam war America realised (just as Britain and several other European nations had discovered years earlier) it is simply impossible to conduct a brutal war of occupation with a conscript Army.
Ali's stand was commendable, but there have been numerous fighters across the globe (of varying abilities) who've shown as much or perhaps even more cojones with respect to political, moral and human issues. The fact that many people seem to think Ali is the only boxer who ever stood up for something he believed in only serves to highlight their own ignorance of the sport's history and the world outside their own nation.

Exactly what it says. Cooper had him down past anyone's notion of a ten count - outside of WWE.
He won the fight because his corner cheated and the referee didn't penalise him.

I'm willing to concede he may have deserved to win one out of his three fights against Norton. But not two.
