no fighter has ever been, is, or will ever be bigger than the sport because if that was the case, the sport would have died when ali left it----i do agree that ali's name is synonomous with boxing and will be forever--he is not and was never bigger than the sport--that's a spit in the sport's face---floyd said he was greater than ali, not because of his name, but because of his record and skill--but this is what he's supposed to believe---ali believed it also--and he's not greater than srr---
manny's punk ass advisor said manny's name is bigger than ali's---and that had nothing to do with his skill and resume---but his star power--which is utter nonsense on his part--not manny's fault---
manny has yet to have that fight that transcended the sport like floyd has had with de la hoya, hatton, and mosley---no matter what people think about the actual in ring action between all of those guys, the anticipation was something special---
the only fight that manny has had that comes close to a mayweather/de la hoya, hatton, and mosley or even coralles was his fight with cotto---
his fights with moralles and barerra and marquez and became great fights after they were over, but no significantly important as floyd with hatton, mosley, and de la hoya and the numbers show it---when manny fought those same guys, the gusto wasn't the same---
when he fights floyd though, this fight will be bigger than any fight in recent memory--maybe even bigger than leonard/hearns, chavez/whitaker, ali/frazier--coz it's the fight that everybody is talking about and it will break all ppv records--and remember, the highest ppv sold fight is still to this day, the world awaits---nothing has come close to that fight---tyson is next after that ppv bout--his fight with holyfield----the world awaits was in may of 2007--it's almost been 4 years and floyd took 2 years off and nobody has still captured the essence of that fight---manny's highest rated ppv bouts were cotto and de la hoya at 1.25 million each or somewhere around there and floyd's fight with shane has topped those with 1.4 million--this has to count people---
so you're absolutely correct, neither floyd or manny is on the same plane with ali as far as names goes---but they are huge names and they have broken records as far as ppv buyrate goes--meaning they get people to care about them enough to want to watch them-- -
Ali is the poster boy for the baby boomers. As long as they are in power, he'll be the biggest thing around.
Just like the Beatles... etc.Comment

No one is saying that Mayweather nor Pacquiao is bigger than Ali. Skill wise, Mayweather is better. Fame wise, it will always go to Ali, he's an icon. I can't say the same for the top 2 draws we have in the sport today.Comment

Pac could be President of the Phillipines. He wouldn't be bigger than Ali coming back from the ban for sidestepping Nam.Comment
