Was Julio Cesar Chavez just a "crude face first brawler" (not my words)

No. Not at all. To even compare Chavez to Gatti proves this guy hasn't seen much of JCC.

He actually slipped punches on the way inside and while fighting inside. He had short, crisp punches, and an outstanding jab and right hand. Much more than a crude face first brawler.

          Of course he wasn't....

What is funny about Poet is that he went in at JCC in that thread...He just doesn't like him it seems. And, he likes Oscar...

You can honestly make a case to me anyways it shouldn't even be debatable. That JCC had better skills than Oscar...

what in the wide world of sports are yout alking about?

chavez is considered by many to be the best counterpuncher of his generation

he's a top 20 atg according to bert sugar (who's a bit crazy, i'll admit, but he's been ringside at more fights than most people on this forum have seen rounds on youtube

if you dont think he was a terrific fighter you clearly dont know enough about the sport to know the goods when you see them

if you're not as fast as some of your opponents
and you're still hitting them with rediculously precise powerpunches to the body and head
            you're the goods

Chavez boxing skills being underrated have caused them to be overrated, people describe his boxing skills as being great - they weren't, they were good. He never outboxed any decent boxer, obviously his inside skills were a thing to behold though. I don't agree with poets assessment of him but I do agree that he was very lucky in many instances. Poets a good and knowledgeable poster though.

He out boxed one of the best "boxers" of all time, Hector Camacho
