Cotto/Martinez: Legacy

miguel cotto fan here, first and foremost.

i've seen Cotto's fights slowly picking up again, the Martinez fight would be pretty awesome, but Cotto does have to get the W over Margarito to really get his fearlessness back.

a win over Martinez however would be monumental, because he'll have to catch Martinez to beat him to the body and up to the head. if he can use his jab well and close the ring off well, he would've done something amazing.

This hasn't been discussed yet, however in the event that Cotto pulls off the task of upending Sergio Martinez and wins the lineal title at MW, giving him 4 division titles and an astounding record in title fights, what will that do for his legacy, both all-time and as a HoF candidate.

What does this do to his legacy if he's on the wrong side of the win column? Go up, stay the same, go down?

Lets discuss the historical viability if Cotto is victorious?

Debate

1) 1st ballot HOF definitely if he wins.
2) At this point in their careers I rate Cotto higher p4p historically regardless of the outcome. Martinez hasn't beat a fighter at a Mosley level.
3) I won't consider Cotto's loss to Pac in regards to his legacy until Pac's PED issue is clarified.
4) If he beats Sergio and Margarito in a rematch then he's top 100 p4p ALL TIME easy.

"Kneeguel" probably saved his career by doing that, and his life...depending on which side of the fence your on.

I think a Martinez win does set him up in the future to get into ATG status, because Pac and Mayweather will now have another legit contender, despite Pac already beating Cotto. I want to see more of a Cotto/Steward pairing to see what's up.

Martinez -> Margarito -> Some nobody/tune-up -> Mayweather/Pac could be some legit stuff there
