MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum is not likely to favor a third fight between Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao and 3-time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez, citing the Mexican's lack of marketability.
The Top Rank chief said that although Marquez is an excellent boxer, he said the Mexican champion no longer has good name recall among casual fans.
“He’s a wonderful fighter and a great young man, but the casual fan doesn’t know Juan Manuel Marquez from [World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion] Juan Manuel Lopez,” Arum said in a Yahoo! Sports report.
Arum cited Marquez’s recent bout with Aussie Michael Katsidis as proof of the Mexican’s lack of marketability. Yahoo! Sports reported that only 4,920 people trooped to MGM Grand Garden Arena to watch the fight.
“The casual sports fan just doesn’t know Marquez, as witnessed by the attendance on Saturday (Sunday in Manila, Nov. 28),” he said.
