    Somewhat Early Stoppage

Since no one else will make the thread, I guess I have to. That was the earliest stoppage I've seen in a major title fight in quite a while. Yes, Marquez was close to having a 10-8 round. Yes, Katsidis was not throwing back (until, oddly enough, the very last exchange before the fight was stopped), but was still moving. Bayless should have at least waited until he was knocked down. He was taking major punishment but had not as yet shown signs of getting really staggered or rocked. The round was near it's end, and I think Katsidis would have survived (although he would likely have been stopped in the next round). Still, the distinction is important, he deserved the chance given the magnitude of the bout.

I thought it was a little bit early, but Marquez was really battering him. And considering the fact that it's Marquez, do you think he would have missed another punch throughout the night? Quick stoppage, but not inappropriately so.

he could have waited a little longer but it was bond to happen. he was taking lots of flush power shots so I cant fault the ref for the stoppage

I thought it was a bit early but I also thought Katsidis should have taken a knee. Marquez was throwing so many punches to finish Kats that I thought if Kats weathered the storm and ended the round he would be able to get to Marquez in the 10th.

I didn't like the stoppage either.

Then again, I like the Rocky type fights where the Refs give a fighter a chance to come back and not treat them like glass dolls about to break because they got caught by a good punch.

Refs these days don't allow fighters to dig deep and make comebacks.

The Berto stoppage was terrible IMO.

This stoppage was just a tad early, but you could see it coming anyway.

marquez was gonna win the fight regardless so what difference does it make?

I think that was part of the problem actually - JMM's stature may have led the ref just to decide to stop it on reputation because Katsidis was a relative unknown and no one would really dispute it. I can't say how Katsidis would have recovered by the next round. Like I said, I think it was headed for a stoppage, but it shouldn't have been stopped yet.

To be honest, i though it was a BS stoppage. I know Kats was hurt but he was/seems recovering. Stoppage will eithe be seconds later or later rounds.

fight was pretty much over. katsidis was slowing down and his punches lost all kinds of steam. there was no way he was gonna come from behind to KO jmm. jmm was still very fresh.

By that logic when a fighter has dominated 11 rounds why should they even go out for the twelfth, right? The distinction is important.
