It's because it's a story about his whole life since his brother/trainer ****ey was a crackhead, plus all other kinds of drama. It's not focused on his boxing career.

Because the fighter has to have an interesting story in and outside of the ring. They don't make movies just because a fighter is the best or great. Micky Ward has an interesting life story, which the film most likely focuses on.
A movie on RJJ would be boring. Oh, a middle class black kid grows up with a normal life and becomes a great boxer. It just wouldn't be a good movie, as great a fighter as he was...

Yeah, as the guys said, the fights don't mean anything, it's the personal drama in the life of the fighter.Comment

Micky Ward got a movie based on his life because Mark Wahlberg read the script based on his biography and he wanted it to be made into a movie. The script was on the Hollywood Blacklist (a list of great, unfilmed scripts). From what I've heard from critics, it's a great film and has a great chance of a possible nomination for Best Picture next February.Comment
