William's defensive skills have been suspect for quite some time. In his fight against Cintron he was getting hit more than usual and this fight confirmed that his defense is simply poor.

Williams just throw lots of punches and his offense isn't great when you consider that he doesn't know how to properly throw a jab to keep his opponent at a distance. He doesn't use his height and reach advantage over his opponents, he always fights an inside game when it is not always necessary. He definitely needs a new coach to sharpen his skills, and take him to another level where he can become an intelligent boxer instead of a fighter who can only fight one way without making adjustments.

I personally do not think that Williams would have been able to beat Pavlik. Williams would have tried to get into a shoot out with Pavlik and eventually got stopped.

I think Williams would cut weight for a big fight at 147 but I think it would be hard on his body. Williams is not even that skinny he has a thick upper back and big strong shoulders and stands about 6'3.Take a look at Pavlik he is not much bigger then Williams and he can't make 160.

I figured Williams and his team planned on a move back down in weight after such a devestating KO.

It's a smart move imo, as long as he can make weight 147 easily. He can still be successful at 154 and 160 but the advantages at 147 ( like his reach, height, stamina, etc) are better there than what they are at 154/160.

What happened on saturday was a concern of mine as Williams moved up in weight. He could afford to get hit at 147 because those guys just didn't hit hard enough or were too small to make a difference but at 160, the fighters were closer to his size and hit harder and it showed last saturday, Martinez wasn't the guy i expected to do it though.

why dont PW try to go up to super middleweight, i think he has a better chance against the top fighters there, as long as martinez dont move up...but according to what i saw in his size and weight, martinez could easily fight as a super middleweight, and maybe as a light heavyweight...why these boxers continue to try and lose weight to make a division, then go back up 10 to 20 pounds on fight nite is ridiculous...there should be a mandate that says you cannot be 5 pounds over the max weight limit come fight nite...that way the fight will be as even as can be.

in martinez's case, without the catchweight against PW, he had to lose 15 pounds to make weight...if he had to drop 15 pounds to make weight, he shouldnt be fighting in the middleweight...he should be fighting in the super middleweight or light heavyweight.
"According to" what I read you're dumb. It's funny how these people consider themselves boxing experts. "According to me", "From what I saw", "I believe" this and that, do us all a favor and stay quiet. You're only a spectator from a living room couch.

True. Anyone can outbox Pavlik. Few can out-slug him though.

If he can make that weight and he thinks that is the weight at which he will be most effective he should fight at it.

Morons going on about it being "shameful" for him to fight back at 147 pounds (Pullcounter and co) have absolutely no idea about the sport of boxing.

By the way I love the "just fight at 160 and "learn boxing craft" and become a great MW champ" argument. Like its that easy. Fighters need to get the most out of their careers with what they have to work with. Not every fighter has the ability to master each aspect of the game, its ****** to think that they do.
