And I understand that he lost some seconds there escorting Martinez to his corner, but then he goes down to Williams and starts the count at 6. Damn.

Now that I rewatch the fight and just concentrate on the ref, it is hilarious. He's slapping them all over the place and is just waiting to jump in and do some officiating.

Exactly... he was just looking to steal the show.

As starjammes said above you can hear Morton say to himself "oh yeah gonna be a lot of holding tonight..." like he was getting turned on at the idea of getting involved and maybe docking some points.

hahaha too bad his night got cut short.

You know I'm starting to seriously wonder if the ref didn't actually distract the fighters.

I found that odd. It was clear PWILL wasn't getting up.

I am sure if Paul Williams reads this thread there will be a protest.

As a ref you should know you are a real dumbass if the Ring Doctor has jumped through the ropes and is pushing you out of the way as you are still counting.

Christ it's a good thing Martinez iced him cause this Earl Morton guy was fixing to ruin the fight by running around slapping the **** out of everyones arms, gettin loud and acting like he was the star of the show.
i think he was counting to help remind williams he was on the canvas

He probably will remember the taste but not the 10 count.

Do you guys not realize Earl Morton was the ref of both Gatti Ward II and III.
He's one of the best Ref's on the east coast.

On top of that now it's an official KO on the record and not a TKO.
                    It's a difference you know.

I didnt say he was a bad ref.

He has a history of doing a good job in big fights. I just don't ever remember him getting so damn involved in the action.

If anything it's doubly funny that it was a good ref who made the mistake.
