Audley Harrison - COULD he be for real?

Okay, it's about the fiftieth Audley Harrison (or Tawdry Embarrassin') post today, but that's a sure sign this guy is starting to get noticed, at least.

I'm not convinced the guy can take a punch, that he can fight at pace, that... Well, I'm not convinced, full stop. Or period, if you will.

However, this week I've began to wonder if he deserves to be recognised as a serious contender. Consider the following, the first of which I only found out today:

    1. The much-hyped Samuel Peter was beaten in the 2000 Olympics by Paolo Vidoz (who also beat Calvin Brock)... Audley beat Vidoz to win Gold to Peter's Bronze.

    2. Audley's last opponent was a man who had an extremely close split decision with Monte Barrett (ranked #2 by the WBC, top five by the WBA and top ten by the IBF)... Audley TKoed him in four.

He's one of those "we'll never know till we see him" prospects. I imagine he might be as good as his opponent makes him, and he'd certainly have the reach and intelligence to be able to box with Big Klit. But would he have the pace, the heart, the drive, the punch resistance and the punch power? After a five year pro career it's still a mystery...

I have to say, I saw him fight for the first time, and I was really impressed. He may never amount to anything, but with his handspeed, and the fact that he likes to throw cominations, combined with the fact that he's a southpaw, it's easy to see his potential. Now he just needs someone to fight...

He's not great, good enough to make some noise in a pathetic heavy division.

Speaking of which, are Byrd and Ruiz ever going to fight anyone again? How long can you hold a belt without defending it?

Finally got round to seeing the Audley fight. Wiggins wasn't really what I'd call a "live" opponent, the crowd were booing and the commentators had it in for Audley, but... I thought he was okay.

He looks kind of awkward and ungainly, but he seems to have reasonable power, good leg movement and so on. I would say he has good technical skills, but even his biggest detractors admit that.

I couldn't believe James Toney - the biggest counter-puncher in boxing - criticising Audley for waiting. And the commentary team giving Wiggins the third round because he got in about two shots. I don't actually think Harrison was wobbled - his reflex reaction when tagged is to move back to avoid any more, but the way the announcers were talking you'd think he was on rubber legs from a hellacious uppercut or something.

Probably the most exciting Harrison fight - this is a guy who could bore for his country - I was reasonably impressed by this.

So... is Wiggins a poor boxer or was it just Audley that made him look that way?

How would Audley fare against lighter-hitting titlists like Byrd and Ruiz?

Combination of both with more towards Wiggins being a poor boxer.

You said exactly that in another thread, but the only place where Tawdry is a British rapper is in your head.

gimmick rappers don't win gold medals, as someone once said, you can't buy gold medals down in your local shop. we'll just have to wait and see how he fairs against the likes of brock and peter, and even vitali klitschko, if he gets that far.
