    WBC grants hopkins request

    WBC grants Hopkins' appeal!
The WBC through its president Jose Sulaiman informed Bernard Hopkins today that they have granted Mr. Hopkins' request, pursuant to WBC Championship Elimination Rule 1.32, for an immediate rematch with Jermaine Taylor for its Middleweight Title. Under normal circumstances, the WBC does not allow direct rematches of Championship bouts. In this case, however, Mr. Hopkins, through his counsel, Arnold Joseph, petitioned the WBC to allow the rematch citing rule 1.32 which provides that in cases in which the champion has been defeated in a bout that the WBC Board of Governors believes was extremely controversial or irregular the WBC can order a direct rematch. Mr. Hopkins, pleased that the WBC, after reviewing a tape of the fight which it requested in connection with its consideration of Hopkins' request, reached the conclusion that the result of the bout was "extremely controversial" and "irregular" and that Mr. Hopkins deserves an opportunity to immediately clarify matters in the ring. "As a promoter representing a fighter, who in this case is myself, I knew I was doing the right thing by filing this appeal," said Hopkins. "And for the oldest sanctioning body in boxing to support my case, after reviewing the tape themselves, speaks for itself. I am very happy with their decision."

a bit far fetched to call it EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL

Even though I have been rooting for Taylor since one year prior to the match, I think this is a fair rulling.

Bernard Hopkins is a freaking legend.
He's even manly and intimidating outside of the ring.

          hmm

Well, Hopkins does deserve a rematch, but not because the WBC says the first fight was "extremely controversial". It was not even close to that. Taylor would give a rematch even without Hopkins' whining though.

Calling every close fight "extremely controversial" is losing it's shine.

            Which was a closer fight, ROY/TARVER I or HOPKINS/TAYLOR I?

I think I scored Hopkins-Taylor a win for Taylor by one point, maybe two.

I usually score Jones-Tarver about 116-113 (7 rounds to 4 with one even).

Hopkins-Taylor was the closer fight in rounds.

I actually like this. He wants to get the fight done as soon as possible with no waiting and I think this is a fair decision. They realized it was a close match, a rematch was going to happen, why wait.
