Wow, some of you guys are clueless...

Of course they used weights. When they say they dont lift weights, it means it is not part of their boxing routine. As one person already pointed out, Roy Jones has quite the home gym at his place in Pensacola.

When Jones says I dont train with weights, it means weight training is not a staple of his boxing program. However, he absolutely lifts weights when not at the gym.

The same can be applied to young Mike Tyson. I keep seeing people write how he never used weights in his prime. This is not true. In another thread it was pointed out that he used the dumbbells after his boxing routine was finished. Tyson trained with weights, it just wasnt made a staple of his routine. However, he would do it by himself.

Remember, even though these guys are boxers, they still understand that being ripped and also having fuller muscle bellies is more appealing than being ripped and looking skinnier.

And before someone says those in the lighter weights cant lift because they will get too heavy...remember we are seeing more and more fighters drain themselves to make an unhealthy weight.

Maybe you should tell that to the girls who like Brad Pitt in fight club.

        Here were their routines:

        Chris Eubank's routine-
(Eubank typed this out himself on his website)

First I started my stretching, then
        3 rounds of shadow boxing,
6 rounds of heavy bag work,
        3 rounds of speed ball,
Skipping between 20 to 30 minutes non-stop, no break straight through.
        50 sit-ups, not crunches proper sit-ups.
        Stretching.
Finish with 20 hits in the stomach with a medicine ball.

        That was generally the routine.
If I was sparring it was the same routine but without the bag work.

For me, boxing is about learning how to box, it is not about pushing weights. I didn't get into weights, I did push-ups but very rarely.

I ran 6-8 miles every morning, sometimes 8-10 miles and sometimes twice a day on Bodmin Moor.
        ----------------------------------------------------------------

        Roy Jones' routine-
(this is from a guy who watched Jones in the gym and talked with him)

warm up - push ups, twists, stretch, bouncing around etc

        shadow boxing 4x4

        heavy bag 4x4

        speed bag 16 mins

        floor to ceiling 16 mins

        25mins skipping

        1200 situps

roy does not use weights and he has 30 sec not 1 min breaks. he does leg weights after his morning run.
        -----------------------------------------------------------------

WTF is up with that? Those guys had awesome upper bodies, how could they not use weights??

what about push ups. is it ok to do
        pushups for punching power?

But I can gaurantee that the vast majority of guys would want to be ripped AND have some muscle on their frames...

Brad Pitt actually looked like he could do something in Troy...thats about it. Even in that movie, he was far form a big guy.

Most guys would prefer to have a little muscle on their frames...

Bottome Line: These guys used weights, even if it wasnt part of their routine.

Of course he lifted weights, he's smart. Many fighters will say they dont train with weights...why this is I dont know. Maybe their trainer doesnt approve (many "old school" trainers are still stuck in the 50s and in denial; tradition is hard to change)...maybe they think it sounds better if they didnt, who know.

All I know is that many top-level fighters nowadays have come to realize the benefits of weight training.

alot of boxers will use weights as part of their regime, but they wont be juicing or doing to the extent of a bodybuilder.

If you train everyday, and give your body enough calories, it will grow into what it is supposed to be...IE its natural potential.

Some fighters have huge muscles, some dont, it depends on genetics, just as some people have huge noses or ears.

they just have a low body fat...

as far as eubank and roy...a lot has to do with genetics. diet plays a part too. i find that my shoulders get waaay larger when my diet consists more of beef rather than leaner meats such as fish...but i don't know if that applies to anyone else.
There's so many misconceptions through lack of knowledge of physiology and training in what you're saying, that I hardly know where to begin...

Well, first of all, resistance is resistance. Whether it's a dumbell or your own body, your muscles can't tell the difference, they react to the amount of resistance. The reason most gymnasts look the way they do with mostly BW resistance (they actually do some weights), is the amount of resistance their exercises offer. A handstand pushup is MUCH harder (and heavier) than a regular pushup. Just try and see how many you can do of each exercise. Therefore handstand pushups are much more related to a heavy military press with a barbell, than to regular pushups, when it comes to what strength parameters you're training, and what type of response you get from your body (hypertrophy, endurance etc.).

The reason a gymnast is so flexible and "supple" is because he works those qualities as well, for hours every day. If you did a gymnasts strength regimen (one adapted to your inferior relative strength level, that is) for as long as you did the weights you talk about, you'd be just as inflexible and whatever side effects you imagined the weights to bring. The key is to train ALL the parameters you need for whatever it is you do. Gymnasts do this, and get the results you see. IF you do weights RIGHT, do flexibility training, have a proper power conversion workout to convert the strength you gain to power, then weights can benefit you as a boxer, no questions about it. You have to know what the hell you're doing though. Just doing bench presses and bicep curls is not strength training for an athlete.

Rugby players lift despite needing flexibility and stamina to run around for 80 minutes.
Ive been at All Blacks training sessions and they lift heavy weights all week leading up to a match stopping only the day before the match. Mind you from my experience those guys also hit the bar each night also yet still blow everyone away, those Maori and Samoan genetics man!
