  • Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” – No Longer "If" For Pacquiao, But "How"

by David P. Greisman - He can do it with 400 punches, and he can do it with one. He can do it with power, and he can do it with speed.

It is no longer “if” for Manny Pacquiao, but “how.”

He has been a champion in four weight divisions, a beltholder in four more. He has gone undefeated for the past five years, lost just once in the past decade, and won 14 times against 13 world titlists. Nine of those victories came by knockout or technical knockout.

No obstacle is insurmountable, no opponent unbeatable.

He has stood in with more powerful punchers and taken their hardest shots. He has broken down men who said he could not hurt them.

Pacquiao did both on Saturday against Antonio Margarito, demolishing a man who, a decade ago, was fighting five weight divisions above him. Pacquiao was a junior featherweight then, soon to capture a 122-pound title, Margarito was a welterweight then, still a couple of years from holding a belt in the 147-pound division.

Pacquiao weighed in at about 144.5 pounds on Friday, 148 pounds on Saturday. Margarito made the contractual limit of 150 pounds on Friday and had rehydrated to 165 pounds by Saturday.

This was a size advantage – for Pacquiao.

So many boxers starve and sweat to make weight, using the period between the weigh-in and the opening bell to pack the pounds back on. They strive to have advantages in size and strength in a division that they do not belong in for but for those few moments they step on the scale.

Pacquiao counts calories, too, but he adds them up rather than subtracting them. Those 7,000 calories per day help him pack on muscle – but not too much mass – so that he can carry his power into higher weight classes without losing too much of the speed that makes his punches all the more effective. How about the reason for the "low" gate was the fact that Margarito is a cheater and fans aren't as forgiving as some people in the media think. And when you add that with the fact that everybody knew he was going to get beat up, you have your answer right there.

      Anthony,

I think, on your first point, that Margarito's fans would still come out for him. As per your second point, what about the tens of thousands who come out for Klitschko fights?

I think Teddy Atlas just says what he is being told to say. You can tell that he does not know what he is talking about most of the time. The information he is getting are usually false. He already lost his credibility to most of the readers who are followers of boxing.

That is a different situation. What I am saying is Margarito is a cheater, who turned off alot of his old fans. I'm one of them. I'm not going to pay money to support this cheater and watch him fight, especially win you know the outcome already.

And I disagree with you that his fans are still going to show up.

He only became real popular right after the Cotto fight, and that was diminished right away.

I think if he had the support of his fan base, this fight would of did a much better gate than the Pac-Clottey fight.

If the Mexican fans on these boards are anything to go by, while he still has some fans, an awful lot of Mexicans have turned against him.

That's in Germany. They wouldn't get a huge live gate in the States unless people thought the fight would be competitive.

That said, even though Pac arguably won every round, I thought it was competitive in the sense that Margarito fought well enough and put Pac under enough pressure to bring out the best in him. He was far from being a passive punch bag, and if Pac hadn't been so incredibly fit, there would have been a real likelihood of a Margarito surge in the late rounds, IMO.

As for your "what's next for Marg" suggestions in the main article, I really think anyone with his interests at heart would tell him to retire. He's made good money, and taken two brutal beatings in three fights - and he took a huge amount of punishment against Cotto as well. This last beating on top of all the others means he's in serious danger of getting brain injury if he continues, IMO.

Attendance at both Pacquiao fights at Cowboy's Stadium far exceed Matweather's fight in Vegas. Teddy 'the hate' Atlas needs a punch to his face.
