Why is BOXING so low on the Totem pole in AMERICA?

The decisions will be the death of boxing fans even for hardcore boxings fans on this board.

I almost stopped watching boxing after the DLH-Whitaker, Chavez-Whitaker, Mosley-DLH II and Lewis-Holyfield decisions. I was that close.

several reasons:

1. bull**** decisions drive away fans.
2. too many boring fights.
3. NO SUPERSTARS.
4. PBF is the perfect example of what drives away fans: loud, arrogant, immature, whiny, boring to watch, no sense of humor, and very little marketability to the public.
5. 3 fights a year for each boxer (if ur lucky).
6. too many belts and organizations.
7. no big fights on cable TV (too much PPV).
8. Don King... nuf said.
9. too much hype, too little action.
10. no more mike tyson-like fighters (sam peter is nowhere near as appealing as mike).
11. too many squabbles over money.
12. NOT ENOUGH KNOCKOUTS!!!
13. too many upsets.
14. not enough dream matches.
15. not enough wars.
16. all talk and no walk fighters.
17. too much time to hype/prepare for fight.
18. too many fighters rest on their laurels.
19. boxing schedule is too wide (meaning not enough fights in a certain amount of time).
20. not enough unifications matches.

one of my teachers said "i think boxing's rigged." i said "it is."

boxing needs to prove me and her wrong.

You guys are right, the only time boxing gets mentioned on networks, its Don King or Tyson, and they're usually punch lines.

Thats Terrell Owens to a T and he has the number one selling jersey in the NFL. And arrogant atheletes isnt a phenomena specific to boxing either.

You got alot of good points! but I would rank DON KING number one he basically invented PPV!

I disagree with number 17 that should work for boxing hyping a fight is what makes the word spread its like promoting a movie they give them 3 months.

The average TV viewer/sports fan does not want to have to pay for boxing, doesn't want to have to stay up til midnight on a Saturday to watch boxing, doesn't know 10 active fighters, and their main images of modern boxing are guys getting arrested, having riots during press conferences, biting ears (one guy has a lot to do with much of this paragraph...lol)

Where I work, the list would be 1. Nascar 2. NBA or NFL (depends on the time of year - NBA gets more interest after football ends) 3. Golf
4. Pro wrestling

You know you laugh about it but Mike Tyson has had a huge factor on the imagrey of the sport IMO. He has disgraced the sport, and although he gives the sport a "star" most of America puts boxing on the same tier as wrestling because of his antics.

Also you have to put some blame on the heavyweight division.. Without a Tyson or Bowe.. it is very rare that boxing will even get any national recognition. It has become especially evident with the demise of Hopkins, Jones, De La Hoya, and Trinidad.

Boxing needs a star heavyweight now more then ever. America isn't going to get sold on the stud welterweights.

As big of disgrace Tyson was he did give the sport a national figure. The only problem is he wasn't the guy we needed to ambassador the sport.

If I ever become champ, I promise I will fight at least 4-5 times EVERY year..

But How in the hell did WWE get so damn popular and they also have ppv?

This is a very good question and I think I have a partial answer. Wrestling markets to kids. When kids are interested in a sport they drag their parents along. These kids also grow up to become adult fans.

In Europe Boxing is amongst their favorite sports below Futbol aka Soccer.
