Its because its an expensive sport to enjoy because all the good fights are ppv and its also a violent sport so it doesn't appeal to girls as much. That and most people enjoy heavyweight fighters and the heavyweight division is dead. It is also not a common sport that a normal person would practice or train for. You also have to go to the internet and forums most of the time if you ever want to get a decent discussion about boxing because mosts people's knowledge on the subject is limited, I would say 95% of Americans have limited boxing knowledge.
Why is BOXING so low on the Totem pole in AMERICA?

i know a lot of people who dont watch anymore because of bad decisions in big fights. Too many belts, no big american names, no network coverage.
sad thing is that none of the reasons have anything to do with the action that goes on in the ring, the sport itself is timeless.Comment

I dont agree WNBA is above Boxing.
Mayweather fought once in 2002. Hes not Mike Tyson, he cant do that and then he wonders why he isnt as popular as he wants to be.

Exactly, PPV was the nail in the coffin.
Originally posted by Kenny BlankenshipExactly, PPV has played a big part in killing boxings popularity.
It went from being in the top five sports to not even being on the radar.
The biggest fights used to be on ABC and the other big networks. It had good exposure, the BEST FIGHTS used to be televised on free tv. Now the WORST fights are on tv (ESPN)
Then closed circuit came into play, and then PPV.
It used to be that all the best fighters were household names, nowadays if you were to mention Erik Morales, Jose Luis Castillo, Chico Corrales or any other top fighter to people, they couldn't tell you who they are. Even if they are what you would call a sports fan that watches a lot of football or basketball, they are oblivious to any of these guys.
If you don't have national tv exposure, your sport will suffer.
Just imagine if you had to pay $40 just to watch you favourite NFL team play every week, would you pay it? I wouldn't.
I have never put money down on a PPV, I have gone to seen fights live and I have gone to bars and spent money on food and drinks while watching a PPV. But I refuse to pay $40 to watch boxing on tv at home, it's just not worth it. Hell, you can get a ticket to a big fight for $50.
The casual fan stopped caring when the PPV's started getting out of hand, another bad PPV with more bad fights and more meaningless belts (i.e. see last weekends DKP PPV).
The titles are now meaningless, they used to be prestigious, now they are nothing but a way to force fighters into paying sanctioning fees to the boxing councils (i.e the Mayorga fight last weekend). The only reason the titles exist nowadays is to get fees from the boxers (i.e. see Vargas suit against the WBC).
The lack of a national boxing commission and federal regulations critically hurt boxing beyond repair. It will never reach the popularity with the people that it once had.
It's now mentioned in the same breath as horseracing, a crooked sport with titles that don't mean anything anymore.Comment

No, no. All the GREAT fights are pay per views.

Then they're talking down to Tyson when they're doing that, like that whale Rita Cosby.

Some would argue but I agree PPV ruined the beloved sport of boxing!
But How in the hell did WWE get so damn popular and they also have ppv? and whoever said people dont wanna stay up on a saturday to watch a fight then how come so many guys stay up to watch wwe smackdown and Raw which is like 2 hours at night?
It is a sad thing when fake Wrestling is more popular then boxing.
The reason is PPV 50 bucks a fight! PPV was not meant to benifit the boxing fans, or the boxers, or the sport it was only made to benifit the PROMOTERS thank you dong king you devil.Comment

Also people dont wanna pay 40 to 50 bucks for something that might end in one round.
Boxing will do much better if they show it on ABC or NBC on Friday nights again or on Saturday nights! they can bring a ton of revenue and do something that can revolutionize the sport again and bring it back to the olden days when familys used to sit every friday with their kids and watch a fight!Comment

Because you get to see the WWE every week.
Your fav boxer will fight 3 times a year. If WWE came on three times a month they'd be in trouble.
