How is Paul Williams fighting smaller fighters? There is nothing wrong with him campaigning in multiple weight classes (147-160). His weight in between fights is no more than 160 so losing 10 lbs or so is nothing (most fighters have to drop many more lbs than this to make weight) for him as far as fighting at 147. He is tall but not muscular at all. Height does not dictate weight class, POUNDS DO... Height also doesn't equate to being big. Williams is tall but is not a big fighter at all. The late Vernon Forrest is an example of a fighter who could have been considered to be a big welterweight or even super welterweight. He was 6'1 but his body was much more developed and solid in comparison to Paul William's skinny frame.
Have you ever watched MMA? Two guys might each weigh 185 but have completely different builds. One might be tall and gangly (like Williams) and the other might be shorter and more compact (like Mayweather or Pacquiao) but each still weigh the same. Tall guy might have the advantage as far as reach but the shorter guy is often stronger with denser muscles/bones and has the advantage in close combat... No different in boxing.
I'd love to see Mayweather fight Williams. I think it'd be an exciting fight because Williams would force him to fight similar to what I think Pacquiao would do against him. Williams and Pacquiao would both come forward and throw an abundance of punches which is part of the formula that someone will eventually use to beat Mayweather. However, I don't think Floyd would ever step into the ring with him. I don't think Mayweather is reluctant because Williams is taller than him (Mayweather has beaten plenty of taller boxers, most notably Diego Corrales). I feel it's because of his style. Williams throws a lot of punches and Floyd realizes this aggressive style would win him quite a view rounds. It would also force Mayweather to open up and throw more punches (making him more vunerable to the kind of punches Mosley landed on him early in their fight) and fight at a quicker pace than what he feels is ideal for him. Additionally Williams is a southpaw (as was Zab Judah who gave Mayweather quite a few problems in their fight) and this combined with his high punch output presents a challenge that Mayweather realizes would make for a bad matchup for him. I think if Pacquiao does well against Margarito we could see him fight Paul Williams next (esp. with Mayweather's legal problems).
