I don't really get into the whole Boxing vs MMA b.s. debate, I lean towards boxing because I grew up watching but I was involved in martial arts when I was younger so the UFC (back when there were literally no rules) appealed to me. But from my personal viewpoint, the top boxers are way more skilled at their craft than the top MMA practitioners.

Brock Lesnar went to the UFC from fake wrestling and was champion after what, 3 fights? He had no amateur background in MMA, no visible skill set, didn't work his way up. He was exposed his last fight against Carwin and Velasquez just finished the job. Lesnar is a circus sideshow that was used to bring in the fake wrestling fan base to the UFC. Hell you can't even tell the difference between an MMA and UFC event anymore- you'll see Brock Lesnar headlining, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Undertaker, etc being interviewed and sitting ringside.

And I don't even have to get into the whole Kimbo Slice thing

Some people are still sold on the idea that biggest muscles=best fighter, and we've seen that theory proven wrong countless times.

The UFC is good at taking the flavor of the month whether it be a fake wrestler or a backyard BBQ youtube brawler and using those gimmicks to bring in the lowest common denominator to drive up sales. You can't walk off the streets or come from the WWE and with a few months of training win the HW championship in 2 or 3 fights. Boxing is about years of honing skill, not fleeting gimmicks.

NCAA freestyle wrestling champion but oh he had no "Amature" experience LOL!

Wow it continues to amaze me how so many of you comment on a sport you know absolutely nothing about.

And to make another point how much amature experience did Julio Ceasar Chavez Sr have before he went on to become a hall of fame boxer????

I guess anyone can come in off the street and become a champion boxer right??

That's amateur experience in wrestling which is just one facet of MMA. Where did he do his kickboxing/striking, boxing, BJJ? He's been exposed 3X already for his lack of skill, he was/is just a gimmick.

to say grappling doesnt work in a streetfight is just plain dumb iam a Marine and guess what all Marines are taught how to take somebody down fast and take them out unlike ufc and mma you cant kill someone most of the stuff they do is not being used fully because of the rules that are inplace. i have train to be boxer befor so i know boxing has its place in a streetfight but aginst bums not aginst real fighters who know both boxing and grappling. the chance of a boxer wining go down alot

As a hardcore MMA fan and casual boxing fan I just have to note that I laugh everytime there is an MMA related thread on the main forum.

I appreciate those who realize you don't have to choose MMA or boxing and can enjoy both.

I find it funny how so many people on boxing forums are threatened by the popularity of MMA, yet on an MMA forum if boxing is brought up the thread doesn't devolve into an MMA VS boxing debate. It's like a political campaign is being waged or something. It's one thing to not appreciate/be a fan of MMA, but it's another thing to discredit it by spreading lies and ****phobia. It makes you look ignorant and honestly you do a discredit to all combat sports.

I agree with you he is an incomplete fighter who was exposed and he proved that you cant just have one skill set to win in the UFC and expect to win forever. But tons of the top UFC fighters started their MMA careers with only one skill set. Anderson Silva was a BJJ black belt when he entered MMA. BJ Penn was also just a BJJ blackbelt. Chuck Liddell was a wrestler with very limited Kickboxing skills when he entered MMA. Randy Coture was a Olyimpic level wrestler with minor boxing ability when he entered the sport. So no he wasn't just some guy off the street unless you are are going to tell me those guy were too. But I will give you this the sport has evolved to the point that you have to be a well rounded fighter to succeed in the UFC now and yes more and more people are learning at least two diffrent fighting styles before going pro which is a great thing! But there are plenty of fighters like top LHW prospect Jim "bones" jones who was a straight collage wreslter before coming to the UFC. The thing is with him he is so ***ing athletic that he took to Mu Thai very well and was able to use it very effectively while not yet being a master at it either.

So yes did they play up Brocks past celebrity? Yes! Is he a bit overhyped? Yes! but is he just some guy off the street? No!! Brock had the pedigree and Athletic ability to win the title after three fights hell before he was in the UFC he was even given a try out to play defensive end for the Minnisota Vikings even though he had never played football in collage. Does that mean anyone off the street can try out for an NFL football team? No!!!
