Boxing is of course down to the opinion of the individual and although I absolutely detest logging on here and reading the usual immature crap - 'haters' - a phrase now as irritating on these sites as lol (particularly when nothing's funny) LMAO, or someone making a piss poor attempt at dis*****g an opinion of another by having to suggest that the opinioned one is gay......but......Sven Ottke potentially being inducted? C'MON!
Now, If greatness was purely defined by statistics, then Sven's place would no doubt be booked but when we're talking about boxing 'greatness' , this simply won't do.
Even the legends had eked out some tough decisions or had a bad day at the office, resulting in a closer than expected decision, but this guy made a career of it...and not even against any of the best - too many close calls, a few of which he'd definitely have lost on away soil.
Credit where it's due - he showed a champion's trait by coming from behind (oooh matron) to get rid of Mundine and also scalped the 90's version of Glen Johnson but this doesn't constitue greatness in my opinion.Comment

Barry McGuigan made the HOF recently. I'd say Ottke is more deserving.Comment

McGuigan is the least deserving member of the HoF, but in any case it was recognition for the impact he had on boxing, not a recognition of his record as a boxer. He had a huge impact - in particular, the fact that Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland and Eire temporarily buried the hatchet to support him at the height of the troubles, which was unknown in sports. And also his impact in mainland Britain, in which he single-handedly revived boxing as a mainstream sport.
But bottom line, two wrongs don't make a right, and to justify all future mistakes on the basis of a past mistake would be to open the floodgates and would completely destroy the credibility of the HoF.Comment
