After Ali had KO'd Liston twice, his first defense was against Patterson, who had been demolished twice by Liston. The sad fact was that Patterson was the best available contender. Now THAT is a shallow division.

Many people are not aware of it, but there's some talented heavyweights with good amateur pedigree who have turned pro the past couple of years:

      Kubrat Pulev
      Robert Helenius
      David Price
      Deontay Wilder
      Vyacheslav Glazkov

However, they are all several fights away from a world title shot.

I enjoy this heavyweight division mainly because of its having the two ATG brothers as champions, but there's others who are decent HWs such as Boytsov, Chambers, Povetkin, Haye and Adamek.

Overall, the division is very good. The other "deep" divisions have about the same or less: two elite fighters, five contenders, five talented up-and-comers and about a dozen decent fringe contenders.

I think a lot of the negativity about the heavyweight division from the likes of Atlas and Kellerman has a lot to do with the fact that most of the best fighters are not Americans.

I say it's solid. To say it's the worst or even close to being the worst show a lack of knowledge on the history of the sport.

Hell even if you never took the time to do the research....if you just looked at the top 10 then there is no way you can call this division terrible.

Both Klit bros are HOF fighters, then you got Adamek, Solis, Povetkin, Bostkov (sp), Haye and a few other solid contenders.

Honestly I think the Klits dominance gives a fascade that this division is bad when it's just the simple fact that their light years ahead of all the other HW's.

It's fucking awful compared to other eras, but I wouldn't call it the worst ever.

I appreciate Vitali wanting to stay active, but a guy like Shannon Briggs getting a title shot or even just being in the ring with one of the Klitschkos at this stage of his career shows the lack of depth in this division. He knocked out 3 bums in one month and earned this shot.

Briggs had a pretty good career and fought some big names, but he was never a big name and he was fringe contender at best.

lol @ Adamek being a decent HW when he nearly got ko'd against old and shot to hell Michael Grant.3 out of 5 of those listed fighters should have stayed at or should be cruiserweights.

I beliebe you to be correct, and discount Steward's meanderings. I'ts hard for a guy woth a scedule as packed as Manny's, to remember exactly what he;s said, especially since he is noted for making contradictory statements .

I think the division is not bad at all, and only LOOKS bad when compared against the Klitschko, against whom, ALL have looked hopeless and worse.

Just eradicate their K perfodmances and natch them against one another, to see the great difference.
