I also think Brinkley earned the shot after beating Curtis Stevens.

Before this he knocked out Andrade and Miranda.(Thats pretty impressive)

He can't help that most of big names are in a tourney that he wasn't invited too.

The one criticism I have is that he turned down the Pascal fight for an opportunity to fight Danny Green or Pavlik.
You make a good point about the fights you named, but what is Bute keeping busy for? Who could he possibly fight next that has even a 15% chance of beating him, I can think of no one because their all in the super six. I have no hate against Brinkley and I agree he does deserve something after the Stevens win, that is if one considers Stevens to be much, its just that people didnt expect Brinkley to win that fight. No hate towards Bute either, I dont blame him really for taking easier fights, keeping his belt and making a ton of money in Canada, but he did have a chance to be in super six, I read he declined when it started and with his name I think if he really wanted to be in he could have taken JT's spot or Dirrell's spot even if that meant canceling this Brinkley fight.

I tell you again, Bute was never invited into the Super 6. Ken Hershman said this in the press conference announcing the tourney.

As for tonight's fight, the result was predictable. Brinkley didn't take much chances, keeping his hands high and jabbing, with a straight right when he was sure he couldn't get countered. What I didn't like of Bute is that his right hand is just slapping around, with the jab or hooks. He doesn't put any power in it, but uses it only to set up his left. He would gain alot by adding a right hook to his arsenal. And keeping his right hand higher would help him not to get jabbed too much...

I don't think Bute had a chance to be in the Super 6, it was set up to be 3 USA vs 3 Europeans from the beginning. That and he had unfinished business with Andrade.

The 6 should fold, given that half of them have dropped out already. And let Ward fight Bute already, though he's going to have to put in a better performance than he did tonight.

Too much wasted motion, tends to paw with the jab alot. There was never any need to stay on the outside against the much smaller Brinkley, Bute should have been more aggressive and ended it alot sooner. In all honesty, I wasn't impressed, but Bute is a serious threat to anyone at SMW. That left uppercut of his is lethal.

I wasn't expecting any trouble from Brinkley at all, so I can't say I was impressed.

He looked good, but he was supposed to look good against someone like this.

I got that part, but why not try to get in when two guys dropped out? Allan Green lobbied hard to get in and he got in, cant see them denying a Lucian Bute.

If Bute had taken Kessler's spot, he would've fought Green, which isn'tanimporvement from his current opposition.

If he had replaced Dirrell, he would've fought Ward, which is what everybody wants. But he would've fought him before Ward gets crowned the S6 winner. Since Ward will most likely win the tourney, they will fight each other anyway, and for much more money with much more hype. And I don't think Ward would risk to fight Bute now, when he is about to win the tourney. The risk/reward ratio isn't good for him. Money-wise, the right decision for both Bute and Ward at this point is to wait the end of the tourney, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later...

There are talks that Bute couldfight Pavlik in March. It is the Best fight possible for Bute at this point. Then he can fight Kessler, Dirrell (if they are healthy) or the Froch-Abraham loser. Then Ward. I believe and hope that the boring part is over for Bute. If all goes as planned, he could clean the division by the end of 2011 and go to 175.

agreed on all counts, except for the pavlik comment. if bute gets pavlik and beats him, then hbo is gonna open up the vaults for him. but, if it's green, then his team goes from geniouses to dufuses.

i'm so happy for jesse. he got his shot, and made the most of it.

hats off to bute for giving guys like brinkley the opportunity to realize their dreams. other champs can't do it, cuz they don't have 12000 people there just for them and regardless the opponent

                    Great analysis.

This kid is the next Max Kellerman.

How does that make much sense, fact remains he hasnt fought a top super middle fighter while everybody else has. Ward fought Kessler in the first round he wouldnt care if he fought Bute in the first, semis or finals. I dont want to see a Bute/Pavlik fight, Pavlik is yesterday's news. But when Bute ever steps up and fights and loses to a top super middle, people will begin to say he was never what they thought he was and that while others were being groomed by the best, Bute was wasting away fighting B and C fighters. I know what style would beat Bute, he's already faced them, but they werent the right fighters, they didnt apply smart pressure, Bute isnt comfortable with pressure its pretty obvious. But Ward would beat him inside and out, wouldnt have to wait 2 years to see it if it ever happens had Bute did his part in lobbying to be in the tourney.
