HOLDING is illegal. If both arms being trapped or a HOLD (hug) is being done, then it is illegal.

CLINCHING is perfectly fine, and fighters are told to fight their way out of the clinch, or work in the inside.

REFS don't always break clinches/holds up. Some are more lenient whereas some break it up instantly. It has nothing to do with rules, just the way some referee's operate.
Clinching is technically against the rules, and in amateur fights points are deducted fairly quickly for it. It is unlikely, however, to see points deducted for a clinch in professional boxing.

I believe Jones did say that in a televised interview. Or a 24/7 or something

He's nowhere near the super talent he once was, but Roy Jones Jr. still appears to have something left.

he did say it (Roy about his father)

            Direct quote:

"At the time I didn't see it like that. But if I win the fight, everybody would have given the glory to Roy Jones Sr.," he says. "That's all anybody would have talked about. No glory would have gone to God or myself or the guy (Merkerson) that got me there. Would that have been right?"

Clinching in the pros is perfectly legal. Amateurs and pros only have punching in common, and in todays amateurs even those rules are a bit different now as they are trying to remove point gains from hooks to top and bottom, and only want punches down the pipe.

HOLDING and CLINCHING are two different things however and you guys are getting them very mixed up. Fighting out of and inside the clinch is a huge part of boxing. All holds/hugs however must be broken up.

A clinch is only a hold when a fighters torso or arms are completely wrapped.
