Fight fans everywhere want boxing’s next Super Fight to between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
That is without question, right?
So let’s call it an innocent ‘slip of the tongue’ when Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said he’d like a few more fights for the Philipino champion BEFORE he faces Mayweather.
What?
This fight should have happened already! That fight should be happening next month!
In boxing two or three fights from now can be more than a year. By then the odds will be slim to none that the Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown ever takes place.
Roach, in an interview with Ronnie Nathanielsz of inquirer.net, said Pacquaio had plenty of boxing left to do.
“I would like to see him get a couple more fights, then get (Floyd) Mayweather Jr and get out of there,” he said.
Inquirer.net describes itself as the official news website of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Philippine’s most widely circulated broadsheet.
The story in question also quotes Roach as saying “If his hunger stays there like it is now, he can do this for four more years if he wanted to. His work ethic is better now than it was the first day we met. He amazed me the first day and he amazes me every day. He has achieved so much but he still has that drive. It’s for his people.”
Let’s hope Roach really meant to say Pacquiao will follow next month’s tune-up against Antonio Margarito with a true Super Fight against Mayweather.
(Pac's tune up will be against "undefeated" in-house, son of a legend who beat Floyd's uncle Roger previously JCC Jr in a "Mexican Revenge" match for Cheato's loss. I'm guessing around May 5th Cinco de Mayo. There are no other safe options that can be promoted as big for Manny at this point.)
