Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez-Paul Williams: The Fight Everyone Wanted

By Keith Idec - NEW YORK — Sergio Martinez isn’t quite convinced Paul Williams wanted their rematch.

The middleweight champion from Argentina gets the impression Williams was coerced into meeting Martinez again, that he was eventually offered enough money to accept a fight he would’ve just as soon skipped. Williams, quite naturally, makes it sound as if the Martinez rematch was the only fight he wanted after Kermit Cintron impersonated Michael Phelps against Williams on May 8 in Carson, Calif.

No matter who you believe or how they got here, perhaps the second-most meaningful fight in boxing has been scheduled for Nov. 20 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. And during a year in which we’ve had few “Fight of the Year” candidates and entirely too much attention paid to the mega-fight that won’t happen, we should be extremely grateful that Martinez and Williams will go at it again five nights before Thanksgiving.

Lou DiBella, Martinez’s promoter, is just pleased he and Dan Goossen, Williams’ promoter, were able to work through countless issues to make sure Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KOs) and Williams (39-1, 27 KOs) didn’t make the same mistakes Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KOs) have made since December. Yea, Sergio isn't knocking Williams out. By PRboxing's logic if PWill cant knock Serg cuz he didn't the first than either can Serg knock Paul out cuz he didnt the first time. Thats just not accurate knowledge, Tarver couldn't knock Roy out the first time, but did in the rematch. Hell P-Dub couldn't knock Quintana out in the first, but avenged a loss through KO. Zab Judah knocked Spinks out in a rematch. I mean its just dumb logic, anything can happen a second time. I got my money on P-will, so many are too high on Sergio, why? Cuz he beat Pavlik?

I recently moved and I am about a 2 hour drive to Atlantic City. I was thinking about going up there for the fight. However, I am hesitant because I know P-Will usually does not sell well. I dont want to be in cavernous Boardwalk Hall with 1,000 people where the fight has not atmosphere. Not to mention while dropping $50+ a ticket, in addition to hotel, gas, food, other entertainment (e.g., ********).

I have been to a live championship fight (Pavlik-Rubio) and it was awesome. However, that was a partisan and passionate crowd, packed arena, and a fight I would have had to fork over PPV $ to see anyways. I have strong worries that this fight live will be dull because of the lack of crowd/buzz.

Does anyone think its worthwhile going to or am I better off spending the $50 on 3 or 4 months of HBO and watching from home?

Nah because alot of people felt he won the first fight..I'm one of umm who thought Martinez edge it out..But also I believe Pwill would have hella problems with Pav IMO..
