Last weekend was a triumphant one for Oxnard trainer Robert ‘Grandpa’ Garcia. Working with his lightweight charge Brandon ‘Bam Bam’ Rios, the two men faced the challenge of unbeaten D.C. fighter Anthony Peterson at the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. Peterson had already been generating buzz on his career over the past few years while Rios had just bust onto the scene with a February stoppage over Brooklyn’s Jorge Teron, so a victory wasn’t expected by everyone. There had been recent rumblings online that middleweight champion Sergio Martinez was being considered by Team Margarito and Garcia noted as much. Martinez suffered the first loss of his career against Margarito in February of 2000 on the undercard of the wild first battle between Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera but in an interesting turn of events the two men could now find themselves working with one another as they both head into huge bouts in their respective careers.
“I’m very close to Sergio Martinez’ camp and he is such a great person and they offered to help us out with whatever we need. I know that he is fighting Paul Williams, who is totally the opposite of Antonio Margarito, but he may be coming a couple days a week to camp. So more than likely we will be having Sergio Martinez as one of our sparring partners. We’ll have another four to five sparring partners but Martinez will be one of them. As of now that is what his coach and his team have already told me.”
looks like margarito is going to get some good sparring work in with martinez...and he's in good shape supposedly....if this comes about...this may
give margarito the edge to beat manny impressively.... -
i see what you mean with the sparring...i feel though sparring is a necessary evil so to speak...the better your sparring opponents the better growth a fighter will gain...by sparring with martinez who is the current lineal middleweight champion I believe will do some great for margarito...
martinez will keep tony on his toes and will help him become much sharper than sparring with say erik morales or nonito donaire....martinez darts in and out like manny is a south paw like manny and is a champion like manny...as someone pointed out the other day...
i think sparring with martinez is the right move for tony and they said that martinez would only be coming to tony's gym twice a week...so tony will get a good all around sparring experience from other boxers...
all in all it's just my opinion...Comment

holy smokes if that does happen margarito will only benefit, martinez is a crem de la crem southpaw with speed and plenty of power, if martinez puts in good work with tony that is not good news for manny. manny is in his prime but his defence is his offense. his defense stinks, mannys defense is no better than margaritos is, this is where tony has a good shot of winning.Comment
