Hopkins was 28 at the time of the first Jones fight, with 23 professional fights. Roy was 24 with 21 fights.
Hopkins was green? Hopkins was in his physical prime and had two more pro fights than Roy. Only difference was Roy's amatuer record. But still, Hopkins was older with just as much pro experience.
Bottomline, when they were closes to their prime years physically, Roy won with an injured hand.Last edited by Truth; 09-17-2010, 12:04 PM.Comment

the more I think of it, that might be one of boxing's greatest myths, that Hopkins was green when he faught Roy Jones Jr. in 93. I agree he became smarter later, but so did Roy. If Hopkins so green, how come two years later he beat Segundo Mercado for the middleweight title, and started a 10 year reign on top. I'll admit he was not as good as he was going to become, but neither was Roy. So to me it was a fair win by Roy.Last edited by Truth; 09-17-2010, 12:04 PM.Comment

It's something said and I think people just took off with it. Anyone who watches that 1993 bout can see that neither fighter was at their peak and both fought like they had to use the bathroom.the more I think of it, that might be one of boxing's greatest myths, that Hopkins was green when he faught Roy Jones Jr. in 93. two years and a draw against Mercado before he won the title. Hopkins wasn't prime yet. That amateur record you speak of is pretty important. While Roy was in the Olympics fighting on the highest stage possible hopkins was fighting in prison. Roy already experienced all the media and fighting on a big stage, hopkins hadn't. Number of pro fights and age doesn't mean prime. It's experience and level of opposition.
So yeah, hopkins was a bit green and wasn't in his prime yet. He was a late bloomer. Same goes for Roy though he wasn't quite in his prime although he was probably a bit closer to it than hopkins.
doesn't matter thoughComment

right, it was a big learning experience for both fighters. That fight probably taught both of them more in that one fight than in their previous 20 something fights combined.Comment

As far as his skills and smarts, I agree he was not at his best, but physically speaking...28 years old is generally considered an athletes prime. you know what I mean?two years and a draw against Mercado before he won the title. Hopkins wasn't prime yet. Nor was Roy.
