well he is no better or worse than most boxers.

Pacman who takes part in ********, cheating on his wife, animal cruelty sports and avoids drug testing is hardly a role model

Boxers are the last people you look for to be role models, they all have issues, some just happen to hide it well.

I think some boxers have been positive role models for children.

I'm surprised you don't know that a lot of kids in America have looked up to and tried to emulate heavyweight champions like Louis, Marciano, and Ali.

      Like you did to Bruno.

        The Black and the White

This list was tough for me because as an African American I have an immediate pride for all of the black fighters, and know a young person would as well. It becomes about what they are able to do in the ring and what they look like as well. They're all fine fighters but out of that list, four are black, and these are the types of fighters I have idolized in the past. Each of the four I think have admirable qualities and can be good role models for African Americans. Obviously, the antics that some of them engage in outside of the ring are terrible examples, but they didn't get to the national/world stage for those qualities.

The reason why this is pretty clear to me is because people tend to identify with each other's ethnicity and personal experiences more quickly. Who did I like back when I was a kid, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Hagler, Leonard etc? There aren't any white fighters among the ones I just named because I couldn't identify with their experiences. Indeed, it's perfectly natural for a black child to be drawn to figures of success in his/her own community, at least that's how it was for me.

So I don't look at this list and say oh boy, Manny's appeared to stop cheating on his wife so he must be a good role model, or JMM eats raw eggs and drinks his own urine he must be great! Who do millions of Mexican kids idolize, Mayweather or JMM? See what I mean?

As an adult I've come to love all boxers regardless of experiences and background. Some things come simply because of birth, while others come with age.

Is it really that, or is it also that there weren't many good white fighters in the States at that time? Nigel Benn was my favourite fighter growing up but now I think about it I can't recall any white fighters from that era.

                    Yes, choose whoever you want.

But I'm just wondering, why would you choose Floyd as a role model over Wladimir?

Wasn't Floyd in jail for beating up his wife?
