Yup and let's remember that now days we have much safer sparring gear than back in the days.

The entire process of staying in shape and preparing for a fight takes a huge toll on a person's body. But yeah, sparring is definitely something that shortens a career, top level fighters probably do take more punishment in sparring than actual fights.

Man I love my Mexican fighters no (homillz). But I don't like the punishment that they be taking. Man they f-ck around and can't have a simple convo with their love ones.

Sparring is needed to see what level your fitness and how rusty you are.

There's a story about how Philadelphia sparring is like the real thing.

Meldrick Taylor was one of the guys who use to war in there.

It takes it out of you for sure, but then these guys love to fight.

Without sparring, boxers would get bored in between fights.

usually most trainers do. i remember richardson saying his job was to make sure his fighters don't over do it, be it sparring, or overall training in general.

but i've heard richardson, steward, mcgirt, and many others talk about how many rounds their fighter has fought prior to a fight.

i think it's something that is looked at, but looked at as necessary for preparation and it's a afterthought if it is too much for a fighter. imho.

Sparring is probably a big cause for some of the fighters suffering neurological damage. Everyone thinks about the prizefights only, but fighters spar a lot of rounds and the headgear doesn't help much, if at all. Your brain is still rocking back and forth.

Terry Norris didn't take too many prolonged beatings in the ring, his chin prevented it, but he slurs his words. He was known to go all out in sparring.

James Toney's speech pattern has clearly deteriorated. It seems like all his does is spar.
