Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” – Five New, True Champions Resetting Their Divisions

by David P. Greisman - The number of fighters with world title belts only serves to confuse. The number of fighters who are truly champions only serves to enlighten.

Between the 17 weight classes and the four major sanctioning bodies, there are a total of 83 fighters with world title belts, be they world champs, super champs, “regular” champs, or interim champs. That’s not even including the diamond champs, champs in recess, champs emeritus or silver champs.

    Thankfully.

    There are seven true champions.

    83?

No wonder so many boxing fans can’t tell their Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (WBC, cruiserweight) from their Oleydong Sithsamerchai (WBC, strawweight).

    7?

    Seven.

Wladimir Klitschko. Jean Pascal. Sergio Martinez. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Juan Manuel Marquez. Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. Giovanni Segura.

    So, so much simpler.

Klitschko has been champion – defined here as recognized by “The Ring” magazine and/or by the Cyber Boxing Zone website lineage – since 2009, when he stopped the other top heavyweight out there, Ruslan Chagaev. Marquez has been champion since 2008, when he scored a technical knockout over Ring champ Joel Casamayor. [Click Here To Read More]

Juan, are you saying he's neither fair nor firm anymore?

What should his new catch phrase be?

Floyd should fight Martinez, take the lineal crown, make history in the process, and stay one step ahead of Pac. But that involves a risk and Floyd ain't into that.

            Fernando montiel !!!!

Why in this article there isn't the name of the BANTAMWEIGHT FERNANDO MONTIEL?He unified WBO/WBC vs HASEGAWA in Japan and continues to win(Rafael Concepcion KO3);MONTIEL is the best mexican boxer right now and his leadership is not in discussion.

Bottom line is Floyd Mayweather Jr is ducking Manny Pacquiao the lineal champ
                Ring is the only legit.

7 champions out of 17 weight classes...
                  something is wrong with boxing...

hopefully, we'll get to see the crowning of other lineal champions in 2011 : super middleweight, cruiserweight, featherweight and junior welterweight would be a damn good start and would create great exciting battles

                  Khan/Maidana vs Bradley/Alexander
                  Marquez/Lopez vs Gamboa/John
                  Bute vs Super 6 winner
                  Huck vs Cunningham

''remember guys, I'm foolish but I'm firm''

                    cause he's definitely still firm

''remember guys, I'm bald but I'm manly''
could be fitting too, just like Bruce Willis
