There were a bunch of us still trying to hold onto the thought that Tyson still had it
Let's face it, folks, Roy isn't quick enough anymore to avoid being hit and his inability to take punishment has been exposed.
how was he exposed exactley?? He looked good against Tarver until he got hit with that BOMB, that shot woulda KNocked out any light heavy IMO...Then against Glenn he wasnt even tryin it looked like..He was gettin hit that whole fight...I dont think he is exposed..i think he can come back and win and be a champion again...
i want to see him spar...just to get an idea where he is now...if for some way he is able to ressurect the LH roy who cleaned out reggie johnson and juan gonzales then it's a tough night for tarver...but if it's the roy that only THINKS he's the LH roy who cleaned out reggie johnson and juan gonzales then it's a tough night for roy...and a third consecutive KO loss.
I voted for Tarver. If anyone can come back from what has happened to Roy, it is ROY. However, I am just not sure enough to say Roy will win. I can name a bunch of reaons he could win, but half of them are not certanties in themselves. I'll post them anyway:
1) Roy was sick for the Tarver rematch. He was sniffling a lot and looked like he had a cold. He also hinted at this in the post fight interview, very slightly, but made no excuses for the loss.
2) Roy didn't train hard at all for Johnson. I believe he trained hard for Tarver, but not for Johnson. A guy in my gym, Kevin Hudgins, who is a 119 lbs boxer in Roy's camp, told me that Roy was training VERY lightly for Johnson, merely going through the motions. Obviously, apathetic training habits can be overcome.
3) Tarver could be underestimating Roy. He says he won't, but he did just KO Roy in the rematch and also witnessed Roy go down from Johnson. He perhaps could have the same problem with rubbermatches that he does with first fights.
4) Roy has taken a long break, reportedly has been sparring, and has been looking in great shape on HBO. He looks younger in the face to me, but that's not to say he won't look old again in the body and even the face after having to train hard at his age for a fight.
Reasons you might not go with Roy:
1) Roy has been through some serious **** with his body. There
s the possibility that he will never recover from it enough to be like he was.
2) Roy is old. He is 36. It's just a fact. The age just compounds the weight issue.
3) He could have a "weaker brain" from the weight loss and concussions he suffered vs Johnson and Tarver. Your muscle system is often the support for one's "chin", and Jones' muscles may have been too far damaged by weight-loss, and the subsequent KO'd that followed.
If motivation is an issue, Roy will get KO'd. I hope he is motivated to take this fight and train hard for it. If he is not, he will go down again. His body and muscles have to be at their best to keep being able to stand in with good, big fighters who have a hard punch like Tarver.
You should post another thread asking who will win after the first 2 rounds of this rubbermatch. Then I'll have a sure answer...heh.
