michael grant was good before the lennox fight!

ive been watching my grant career set which i got 10 fights & am waiting for the adamek fight.he could take a pretty solid punch but his punch resistance got alot weaker from each fight.he got hit alot! most of his opponents were hitting him at a 45-50% clip.sullivan, izon, savarese, golota & then lennox.even lesser opponents were hitting him with relative ease.the only guys who hurt him in all the fights i watched were guinn, golota & lennox.all three were big punchers.mccline dropped him with the first punch but it was because grant broke his ankle when he stepped in to exchange.grant wasnt that bad & was always in great shape.he had a stiff jab & solid uppercut.he never used his size to his advantage.he always fought small & in the inside at times where he could have stayed outside & pumped a jab in his opponents face.the downfall started during the golota fight.he took a beating in that fight but showed heart to win but he was never the same again.much like bowe after the 2 fights with golota.im interested to see how he does now.he took the adamek fight maybe a little soon in his comeback but apparently he had a chance to beat adamek.i want to see him fight povetkin.

I agree he was a good fighter, a top up-and-coming heavyweight, standing 6'7" and having a reach of 86" (that's 1" taller and 5" longer than Wlad)

And there is no shame in losing to Lennox Lewis, a top 10 ATG heavyweight. And Grant showed a lot of heart in that fight, he kept getting up and trying to fight.

But what really ruined Grant is what happened AFTER the Lewis fight. Grant hired a nutcase to train him. And that nutcase didn't even have him warm up for the next fight with McCline. George Foreman's comments on HBO during that fight:

Foreman says: "Grant got injured because he didn't warm up. His trainer should have had him warm up before the fight"

Lampley says "Atlas is a good trainer, isn't he?"

Foreman replies "I don't care who he is, you don't send a fighter in cold without warming up, because he's liable to get injured"

By the time of the Guinn fight, Grant's confidence was gone. "I had days in the gym where Michael stopped training and started crying," Atlas explained, right before Grant was to fight Dominick Guinn.

i agree about him being cold but the fight before that he fought journeyman gilbert martinez.martinez caught wind that grant already had the guinn fight signed & took grant 8 hard rounds & actually rocked him a couple times.right after the fight atlas told him he doesnt care if he loses as long as he tries & he told him to be the driver of the car & not the passenger.he also told him that if grant doesnt want to try his best that he should retire.they split after the guinn fight.i remember atlas told moorer he should retire & moorer got rid of him & his next fight tua koed him in 30 seconds.one thing atlas knows is when a guy is shot....

I agree. I think he would beat a lot of people right now, just not the top 10 or 20 heavyweights.

He was always a raw fighter but that's to be expected from a guy who picked up the sport late and had little amateur background, people expected a bit too much from him but he still managed to beat some good guys.

rahman was similar...he didnt start boxing until he was 20 & had only 10 amateur fights...he was a 2 time world champ.many hack on rahman but if you think about it he was a bigtime overachiever considering his lack of amateur experience & the late start he got

Boxing fans and media really turned on Grant after the Lewis disaster. He was a pretty good heavyweight before that. A fluke loss to McCline and Teddy Atlas' training ruined what was left of him.
