ROD DOUGLAS would of been better than all of them ( beat Watson at 83 and 84 ABA west ham div finals, beat Benn at 85 ABA west ham div final, beat Collins at european cup 86,used a young Eubank as a sparring partner ) unfortunately Douglas' people pushed him to jump in against Herol Graham too quickly and he got brain damage ..

I ****ing watched Douglas V Benn at ABA divisional final in 86, I was actually there with my Dad and Uncle! It was the first time I ever saw Benn, it was a great ****ing fight, it seemed personal and they were trash talking eachother just before the fight and had to be split apart (something to do with Benn's brother?), then in the fight Douglas was going mental on him you could hear the noise loud of Douglas' gloves smacking off Benn's headgear but then Benn lost it and came back going mad onto Rod.. Benn knocked him down a few times and got the decision. Douglas had beat Benn the previous year so Benn had reversed the loss. Benn was the first and only guy to knock Douglas down, and he hit him ****ing hard. But yeah, Douglas was a good prospect.. it was a case of whoever won the divisionals that Douglas and Watson were in, either Douglas or Watson, would go on to win the nationals too because Douglas and Watson were so good. Watson soon turned pro because he was pissed off about it, Douglas caused him to turn pro as a teen. I think Douglas won ABA nationals in 83, 84, 85 and 87 (Benn won 86, beat Douglas at divs and went to nationals instead and won them) and Douglas was robbed at the 84 Olympics but won Gold at the 86 Commonwealth's as Benn's replacement. Yeah he sparred with Eubank from July 89 right upto the Graham fight, so they had an awful lot of sparring sessions over those few months and Eubank I think said in his autobiography that Douglas was second only to Graham out of guys he sparred with and very good etc. Such a shame what happened to Douglas and Watson man, the British Middle's of that era could of really dominated! Hey, imagine Benn or Douglas going to the Olympics instead of turning pro and taking on Roy Jones! Benn and Douglas were both better amateurs than Richie Woodhall (especially Benn, he was the **** beating Douglas before turning pro), and Woodhall did well against Jones in the semi's.

Graham of 86 beats Hagler of 86 every single day of the week, and twice on a Sunday. Hagler was a washed up old slugger by then, a shadow of the cute counter-punching Hagler of 77-78 who Monzon wanted nothing to do with. Danish star Kalule was Hagler's next opponent and many people were predicting that the in-form Kalule would upset Hagler or atleast be his toughest ever test due to his form at the time, Kalule was an awesome fighter who had pushed Ray Leonard to his limits, but then Herol Graham stepped in and DOMINATED Kalule. Graham was Hagler's mandatory before the Hagler-Leonard fight, and against Leonard you saw Hagler was washed up. Hagler at his best was around 77-78 but not a lot of people know that, he switched from counter-puncher into an all-out attacker for his reign of terror but that wasn't actually Hagler at his best! Hagler at his best (the late 70's counter-punching, power-punching cutey) would beat any 160lb fighter that ever breathed, including the Hagler that toppled Duran, Hearns and Mugabi.

Herol Graham was at his peak around 84-86 when he had Hagler/Hearns avoiding him like the plague. He was like nothing you've ever seen with his elusiveness, a defensive wizard like no other, he was quick, slick, awkward, unorthodox, and a tricky switch-hitter. Everybody expected him to win world titles and be a legend, but it never happened, and after splitting from his wife early in 87 and splitting from sidekick Brendan Ingle around the same time, and being depressed at being abvoided, Graham lost to Sumbu Kalambay in a big upset that was supposed to be just a 'warm-up' before he fought for the world title. He was a shadow of his former self against Kalambay, but got back with Ingle after that loss and had a real close fight against Mike McCallum in 89 for the vacant world title despite being washed up. McCallum said that Graham was "by far" his most difficult opponent and admits that a draw would of been a fair result, and this wasn't even Graham at his best!

Graham's re-match with Kalambay was in 1992 in Kalambay's backyard of Italy, that's when Graham got robbed.

There's Hatton, Calzaghe and, uhh.., that's about it

But the Graham-Watson-Douglas-Benn-Eubank era had so much potential, they were all very talented black British Middleweight's and could of dominated boxing.
