Anthony Logan was top 20 in the WBA rankings, Eubank jumped from outside the top 100 right into the top 20 after his win over Logan.. then after seven further wins Eubank had a 20-0-0 record by 1990 and had climbed into the top 15, he beat Denys Cronin in a British title eliminator (he didn't decide to go ahead with his British title fight against Herol Graham though because he felt he was good enough to go for a world title, but he did spar with Graham instead) and then after winning the WBC International title from world-class Hugo Corti (who was obviously ranked somewhere above Eubank), Eubank was placed in at #8.

When Nigel Benn beat up highly-rated David Noel in the 1st-round, if I remember rightly he got into the WBA top five with that win. Benn's fight with Michael Watson was going to be screened live in America, the very classy and smooth-boxing Watson was ranked #3 in the WBA rankings at the time and the winner of Benn-Watson was going to be guaranteed to meet whoever won the Herol Graham Vs Mike McCallum match-up for the vacant WBA title (McCallum beat Graham despite being the underdog, so the winner of Benn-Watson was to face McCallum instead of Graham). But then Steve Collins pulled out of his proposed IBF title fight with Michael Nunn and decided to fight for the WBA title instead (Collins was #1 with both IBF and WBA after beating Tony Thornton), so Watson had to wait a year before meeting McCallum (McCallum dealt with Collins).
It had looked like defensive wizard Graham and knockout artist Benn would be fighting in a fascinating match-up, but the underdogs McCallum and Watson ended up picking up the wins and fighting instead.

Well Lennox Lewis and Ricky Hatton aren't as good as Nigel Benn or Chris Eubank were, the very recent ones are Lewis, Hatton, Joe Calzaghe and Naseem Hamed but none of them are a Benn or a Eubank.

I remember in 1989 the fight was scheduled for Watson to travel to Boston to fight Collins for the vacant european middleweight title, but then Watson was offered much more money to fight Benn for the commonwealth instead due to Graham pulling out of the Benn fight,Collins was pissed and went in search of the USA title instead.Eubank was also beginning to turn heads around this time after his easy win over Logan who had caused Benn so many problems in his previous fight. Then I remember in 1990,after both Collins and Watson fought McCallum,Collins and Watson were due to fight for the vacant european super middleweight title but then Watson was offered a fight on the BennVEubank undercard which if he won he would likely fight the winner some time in 1991.I think CollinsVWatson would of been a really good fight around 1990 when it looked like they were going to fight, they were the top two in europe before Benn beat DeWitt and Barkley and Eubank beat Benn.

The ugly-styled, effective Collins against the smooth-boxing Watson. A lovely little match-up here!

Collins' body work, work-rate and infighting would cause ANYBODY problems, not to mention his ability to grind an opponent down with his chin and toughness at just absorbing punches that his opponent had put much effort into. But Watson was class, very classy and also physically class, he had textbook skill to work from as his platform but could adapt to different fighters and different styles not just before a fight but during a fight. Watson had a fluent jab and each punch he executed was usually well thought-out with quick-thinking, and he had some decent right-handed counter-punching ability to the head thanks to his patience. But Collins was also a smart tactician, he was smart and cagey when up close and personal, he was as tough as nails. Both men had great stamina, with Watson able to remain at the same pace throughout a fight, able to punch as hard in the last round as he could in the first round, but no Middleweight out-works Collins! Also, Collins was quite a punishing puncher when the opportunity permitted so Watson would have to be alert at all times.

I think I'd go for a Watson points decision, as most would, but it would be pretty close.
