I think that a world class, peak boxer, fast of both hand and foot, would fare really well in the octagon but this isn't likely to happen as they would likely be passionate for success only in boxing, hence them embarking on a career in that chosen art and only makwe the switch, as per the aforementioned others, when they've ran out of options, and credibility, in boxing.
    it's all about money.

even journeymen boxers make more money than most mma guys.

if they ever catch up as far as money goes , then we might see some good boxers go try mma.

toney made more money that 99% of the ufc stars do.

exactly could you also imagine a boxer who had trained in mma a bit and was able to snuff takedowns and bring it bak to the stand up if taken down

        they could be effective.

wrestlers/bjj guys nightmare is a striker they can't take down.

a boxer doesn't even need to train in much of anything except takedown defense.

if they can get a takedown defense they can be very effective just keeping the fight standing.

Good points......plus, can you imagine someone as rapid and explosive as pacquiao getting ready to pick off an MMA opponent with those tiny, mit like gloves? there'd really be only one outcome for me.

He would be excellent on his feet, powerless on the ground.

A takedown and a ground and pound will make him look really bad. But if he wants to do it, more power to him.

strikers were a nightmare for the grapplers for a bit in mma.

until everyone started cross training more , the champions usually went by trends.

1st it was the bjj/submission guys that dominated.

when they switched to judges scoring , the wrestlers started dominating because they can get the takedown and hold people down 'til the end of the fight.

then when kickboxers learned how to stop takedowns , they started dominating.

if a boxer can get good at takedown defense , the only threat to them is the guys who can kick real good.

I don't think he's washed up and looking to take a huge paycut.
I wish MMA would die already.

I would lose much respect for Manny if he did this.

You put a half decent MMA fighter and he won't have a chance. There's no way they would dare to trade shots with him. Takes years of experience to develop some skills in submission/groundwork, most of these elite MMA fighters have been training almost all their lives likewise with elite boxers.
