Does Margarito cheating scandal HURT or HELP the fight promotion? (for CASUAL fans)

I've seen a lot of posts in NSB about "boycotting" the fight because they didn't want to "support a cheater" in Antonio Margarito. However, let's remember that majority of the ticket sales and PPV buys come from casual boxing fans and not representative of what's going on in the boxing message boards.

When the 24/7 hype machine starts to roll, the Margarito scandal will be played over and over again. This will only make the casual fans "root against" Margarito. Let's face it, it's hard to sell a fight with two good guys and it's pretty obvious in this fight which fighter plays which role. And the David & Goliath angle will also play a good part in the promotion.

Anyhow, do you think Margarito being alleged as a cheater HELP or HURT the promotion? (from a casual fan's perspective)

    it really depends.

marg gotta be willing to play the part of the villian. Top Rank and HBO gotta be willing to make it a good guy (pac) vs bad guy (marg) narrative.

if they play it right, it could do very well.

The good guy just gave an undeserving cheater a great pay-day.

Help. The casual sports fan didn't know who he was before it happened.

            From a hardcore fan's perspective, I agree.

However, how do you know that casual fans will think that Antonio does not deserve this fight? 24/7 hype machine will make Antonio the most hated guy on the planet and this might entice the casual fans to see him get beaten to pulp. Add to the fact that the heroics will be played by Pacquiao.

I think it goes both ways depends on how each person looks at the supposed cheater's offense.
